Challenge
65F / 18C
Sunny
Total Time = 7h 15m 47s
Overall Rank = 552/657
Age Group = f40-44
Age Group Rank = 136/186
Pre-race routine:

up at 3:30 to drive to cousin's parent's house to go together. Arrived on site about 5:45am.
Event warmup:

Swam a little - water temp warmer than air temp
Swim
  • 47m
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

Made the first turn and BAM I was blinded by the sun. URGH that was an awful feeling to just kinda swim blind. I picked some people to pace off of and hoped they could see. I swam a little crooked.
What would you do differently?:

Guess I better work on my OWS.
Transition 1
  • 04m 9s
Comments:

Not my best transition. I knew I blew the swim so I wasn't really hurrying in transition. I just kinda took my time making sure I had all my stuff.
Bike
  • 3h 47m
  • 56 miles
  • 14.80 mile/hr
Comments:

So the course was hilly - I had ridden it once before and felt like I didn't ride it all that bad but I was ready for it to be over. I dunno I feel like my cycling legs haven't come around yet this year. It's certainly been the most intense training I've done in prep for IMMT - eye on the prize, though, right?

I lost 10 minutes between the 2 pee stops - good, bad or other it is what it is. I have a bunch of people telling me to just pee on the bike. No thanks. LOL

What would you do differently?:

I need to do more training where I watch my heart rate and get a feel for what effort I can really sustain over the longer races. In sprints and olys I just go all out but I know I can't do that here so I probably don't hit it hard enough.
Transition 2
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

Pretty good transition for me :)
Run
  • 2h 35m 27s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Did I mention this course was hilly? Right out of the gate, mile 1 was STRAIGHT UP. Oh well....just keep running...just keep running......followed by some rollers and then right into the sun! I will say Challenge had great aid stations - fully stocked and the volunteers were awesome.

Starting out on course 2 (the Oly course from the day before) was a downhill that you would eventually have to run back up. I figured that was the bad hill at mile 10 everyone warned me about. Well it was NOT. I came around the corner at mile 9 and looked up and thought it was a joke. Really? OK here we go!! Just keep moving forward!!

I really try NOT to look at my Garmin during the run unless I'm curious about something specific at a given time like "what's my speed right now?" So I really didn't know how I was doing on the run. I just wanted to finish! When I finished I was pleasantly surprised given the hills - I'll take the 2:35!
Post race
Warm down:

Very pleased that I finished the race feeling pretty good. Definitely not dehydrated LOL and my stomach felt fine.

Event comments:

First (and probably last) time at Quassy but Challenge put on a great event. The staff and volunteers were awesome!

NIce job, Randee!!  The hills of Quassy are no joke, especially on the run.  Sounds like even though there were a few small (very small) glitches in your race plan, you had a solid race and learned some things to apply at IMMT.  Keep up the good work!

Ah, how we love to torture challenge ourselves!  I predict you will do great at the Olympic now that you know what is in store for you.

The boat was being tossed around. Someone noted that there were whitecaps on the waves. Another guy said, “This is going to be challenging.” I began to wonder what he meant by 'challenging'.

It’s a challenge to push yourself a little harder and a little further. Be proud of every workout that is accomplished and every step-even the baby ones-that you take on this course to the finishline.

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
