Subject: Spray Tans

My wife is wanting a spray tan for her birthday, but we have no experience with it or know anyone that has done a spray tan. So we have questions:

1. how long does it last?

2. can you ease into the tan? (don't wanna go from pale to Hawaiian Island tan in one afternoon)

3. is it safe?

Anybody know?

Perfectly safe. Been around for ever, made from beets.

If you take care of your skin, it can last 10-14 days. It's something you buy, so you have to take care of it to get your moneys worth.

You can't just go to Jamaican. It's basically a "stain". It colors the top of your skin. So when your dead skin cells fall off, so does the tan. If you try to go too dark, you will look like a Cheeto. And that's no lie. Most reputable places won't over do it. But you can certainly get color. Most have color in them.... so you look great coming out, but that comes off in the shower. But that's what bodybuilders do for competition. Basically spray paint. The actually "tanning" agent, that's what lasts.

We own a tanning salon. They are very popular. UV isn't going away, and either are spray tans.

I just came back from Hawaii.  I'd recommend that over the spray tan.

Check into the ingredients they use... I have been to one that uses "organic" sprays, supposedly better for your skin but who knows. Mine lasted around a week. It will visibly start to wash off a little in the first shower but that's normal. They told me NOT to use a bar soap, it will react with the spray and turn you colors supposedly. They should have a flier or information on how to keep the tan longest... don't shower for 12 hours (so get it done in the evening and sleep in loose clothing that may get stained), moisturize well, etc.

The technician should be able to recommend a good color - mine used a scale from 1 (just a little glow) to 5 (Jersey Shore) and she recommended a 3 for me based on my base tan and skin tone.

So.. a couple things. I have not heard about bar soap. Not that we use everything out there... and I have my own job. The wife is the expert. Anyway...

I have to be guinea pig every now and then. I get sprayed, go home and take a shower. DHA is the ingredient. It can be clear. No color at all. You leave it on to react with skin. The longer it stays on, the better. So yes you can get it in the evening and sleep in it. Morning and shower that night. But you can't really do anything else either. Workout, swim, anything really. Wear loose clothes, because you will basically wipe it off. So you get it, then it has to stay. But lots of folks do it, and they manage to make it through the day fine. Usually the only people we get that screw it up involves water.

The color is a "bronzer". Literally color to make you look tan for the moment. Comes off in the shower. Also comes off on the sheets if you sleep in it. The great thing about all this is water cleans it easily. I've never seen it stain anything. Again, it you work out or sweat, well, the color can actually run. Prom night and weddings are big business. But again, you can get clear. You don't have to get color at all.

As far as what not to do... most places will give you a list. We do. But basically... you don't want to ruin the spray before it develops. Waste of money. Second, since it basically stains your skin, when the dead skin cells falls off, so does the tan. So it usually lasts a week. It can last 10 days if you take good care of your skin. Dry skin is no good, moisturizer is is good. It's why I don't bother trying to keep one. Dry skin and I don't care.

Last is how. They call it air brush, but it isn't air brush... but custom spray by a person, or in a booth. Custom is much better... IF you get a good person. It will much more even and no lines. And some areas need more or less, so it will look better. The booth is pretty good. But you stand in a position, and a automated sprayer sprays you. It can be good. Mystic is OK. Versa Spa seems to be well liked. We just got a Pura and really like it. I think it does pretty good. The wife does it better though. But some folks don't like getting naked. Not like you have to... but you don't want lines either, so...

You don't have much to loose. Give it a shot.
