Subject: Varicose vein and running

Hi, I am a mother of two. I've always loved running, however after giving birth to my second son, I developed this varicose vein. I never imagined that an athlete like me could ever develop varicose vein. I am a bit worried about starting my running again. Will it make the condition worse? I am planning to get an evlt treatment done here in Toronto. But meanwhile I would love to start running. Is it safe to run with vericose vein? Has anyone gone through similar situation? Please advise.

I have varicose veins. I've had them since I was 13 years old.

I had the concern about running with them as well. I've had 2 surgeries, one which they went in through the groin on both sides and one when I was awake. I prefer to be asleep during these surgeries! I will have to have more in the future. I get more sore after standing around for 8+ hours than from running to be honest.

I use cep socks to run. They are as close to medical grade I can find and they come I pretty colours. I don't know if I will ever do a marathon or full ironman with my veins but I'd like to try a 70.3. I've run a few half marathons and 10ks without any issues. You should be fine to start running again if u have concerns talk to the specialist. Everyone will tell u running is bad, but I think weight gain is worse on them.

Varicose veins plague an estimated 20% of our population and those who are fit and active are unfortunately not immune. These tortuous veins are early manifestations of chronic venous disease.

Would getting the veins fixed have any potential triathlon performance implications? Is there anything else I should be doing for them when I swim/bike/run?
