Overcast
Total Time = 6h 20m 45s
Overall Rank = 99/
Age Group = 35 - 39
Age Group Rank = 13/
Pre-race routine:

warm up swim
Event warmup:

checked in at the event and ran back to car in sandals which gave me blisters - only had 10 mins in transition to get things ready. TOO RUSHED!
Swim
  • 39m 19s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim, felt great
What would you do differently?:

Better navigation - swim straight!
Transition 1
  • 05m 5s
Comments:

Could have been faster. Long trek up to mount line through the volleyball courts and up the hill so I just walked. Good idea to do so I think.
What would you do differently?:

Was looking for Jim out of the swim but should have been concentrating on what I was doing!
Bike
  • 2h 59m 1s
  • 48.4 miles
  • 16.22 mile/hr
Comments:

Good bike, felt strong. Rained on second loop towards the end so that effected me a little.
What would you do differently?:

No bottle rocket in the back so that meant less Infinit.
Transition 2
  • 05m 52s
Comments:

Ran through transition which was good.
What would you do differently?:

Not worry about peeing - just ended up going in the woods anyways, couldn't think straight. Was looking for port-a-potty in transition and didn't want this to impact my run time. Time to stretch. Should have just gotten going.
Run
  • 2h 31m 26s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Paced myself on what I knew would be a tough run. Took appropriate breaks to walk in the heat when I felt my heart rate was getting high.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, I felt that I had a good run given the conditions.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretching, water, keeping in the shade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Sun and humidity after it rained on the second run loop.

Event comments:

Could have more time to get started and set up. Maybe more drink stations/food/aid on bike course and nutrition on the run. Overall had a really fun time and a good race.

My issue is that I am currently deployed and training outside is proving difficult, especially on the bike. I have found a safe 10km running loop but I am struggling with the bike training.

This is not an easy task, especially for the “9-to-5er” with family. But you can do it – all without sacrificing your marriage, job or family.
