I did a local OWS race yesterday and a couple of the guys where wearing lavaplants/ blue seventy core pants and at least once placed in the non-wetsuit division. I thought that was pretty questionable, but it was pretty much an anything goes kind of event. Someone had a waterproof mp3 player and someone else was swimming with a snorkel. It still anoys me that they where competing in the non-wetsuit division because there is a clear advantage over a regular wetsuit.

By the letter of the law, yes, they're "wetsuits."

Its a wetsuit. Think of it this way... if its not legal under FINA rules and is made of neoprene then its a wetsuit.

They aren't legal for USMS races.... but then again neither are wetsuits. This race had no governing body, so I should probably just accept things the way they are even if it is annoying.

Yep, snorkel is good. Lava pants &/or the shorts, etc are, or should have been, considered wetsuits. If it was a non-wetsuit race or division, then those who wore the wetsuit were not legal.

FYI, snorkels are not allowed at 70.3 and IM events. Not sure the logic, but they aren't without a doctor's note :-)

I quickly browsed an article in Men's Health that talked about doing a triathlon, and how it wasn't really that hard. With a "tsk!" I quickly turned the page while thinking, "Yeah, right!"
