I tried it for the first time two days ago for a fifty mile ride. That afternoon I got rancid gas which hasn't stopped and now I have a really sour stomach which hurts. Anybody else experience this? I had no issues during the ride. I did mix it the night before and put it in the fridge. Took it out and rose right away.

Perpetuem does not agree with me. Stomach issues.

Take some pepto if you have it. Hopefully it will calm your stomach. If you are brave try it again later (assuming you have more mix left if not stay away) in case it was something else.

I used Perpetuem all last summer with no problems. Then came race day. At about mile 15 on the bike i had to stop and donate all my nutrition to the side of the road. I stopped the Perpetuem for a while and drank only Skratch until that was gone, then I had to drink the Perpetuem again until I got to the aid station and could get Gatorade. The Perpetuem never stayed down.

I have a hard time even looking at the packets of Perpetuem when I go to the tri shop to get Skratch.

The issue with Perpetuem is that it has a spoliage half life measured in a couple of hours, more so in hot weather. Hammer makes arguably the worst endurance nutrition products imaginable.

Mix it right before your ride or mix most of it and throw it in the freezer then mix one bottle right before the ride.

You cannot let that stuff sit for more than a few hours.

I thought I could get away with pre mixing of it went straight into the fridge. I guess not. I mixed it with water that wasn't cold but immediately put it in the fridge for maybe 7 hours. Then it was consumed over a 2 hr 45 min period. It never seemed cold even at the first sip. I think it must have just wrecked my stomach. A lot of people think your whole body's ability to function is tied to the gut and I'm starting to believe that. Last night I slept with a heating pad on it and it helped enough that I attempted a ride this morning. No stomach problems but I was totally sapped of energy and I think it was just my body being worn out from coping with the stomach full of spoiled soy protein.

I have had zero issues with this. Very interesting. But hearing this is worrying me a bit. I use Perpetum for all long rides and all halfs I've done and it's done me right with no GI issues...I'd hate for this to rear it's ugly head during an IM.

I wouldn't worry if I were you. I'm just one guy. This was my first time using that product and I just wanted to throw a line in the water to see if anyone else had a similar experience. Obviously lots of people have used it with success and it sounds like you are one of them. You've tested it in training and shorter races so you probably are a good consumer for the product.

Yeah, I've used it for years without an issue. Opened a bottle that had been in the fridge for about a week and that was NOT going to happen

I'm on the list of people who don't stomach perpetuem well. In fact it's like an experiment in projectile vomit.

I trained two years with perpetuem b/c it works great for me training but yes, Sunday night I'm gassy gassy gassy!  I just learned to deal with it b/c it was good otherwise. Apparently its a common issue with perpetuem users.

I've always recommend bulk maltodextrin as a liquid calorie source for triathlons.

Maltodextrin is a long-chain sugar, not that different from sucrose/fructose, but tastes only mildly sweet, even in bulk. Perpetuem's calories are 87% from maltodextrin (it says it directly on the Hammer website), so it's the main energy source for Perpetuem.

Since it's a pure sugar with no proteins, it keeps extremely well even in hot and cold conditions. Put 1 cup in a regular bike water bottle, and it's approximately 300-400cal/bottle.

Best part - you can order it online in bulk for $60-$65 for 50 friggin' pounds of the stuff. I've been using my last batch for 3.5 years now, and as long as it's stored in those plastic paint cans from the hardware store, it keeps forever.Compare to $50 for maybe a 1-2 month supply of Perpetuem. Endurance sports drinks are often just means of trying to sell you this exact same stuff with trace additives, for 10x the price.
