Subject: Mountain Man Half tips needed :-)!
Sorry for the double post !

I'm up in Flagstaff for vacation and have been doing my IM training up here. I would really like to do Mountain Man Half in August, but holy cow the altitude is killing me. Usually it isn't too bad, but I've been so tired, frequent headaches and my breathing is of course taking more effort due to the altitude.
I've trained at altitude before, am drinking PLENTY of water, eating enough, resting a lot, and bringing my intensity down to keep my HR under control.

For those who have done MountainMan in the past - any tips or past experience regarding the race? Much appreciated thanks!

Wish I would have done more altitude training.
No matter what I tried I felt like I couldn't get a full breath.
I ended up accepting to slow my swim to where I was at a comfortable effort, lower my Hr intensity by 10 BPM on the bike and run.
Happy Training!
See you there!

For me, I notice it on the swim within the first 500yds or so. Typically going out the way I would in Tempe or elsewhere. then it takes me a second to re-catch my breath and everything is fine. Like LuckyLo said, start slow and build to a comfortable level. On the bike, I only notice it when climbing, but nothing too drastic. Same with the run, once you're up-and-down the big climb, the rest is gentle. My advice, take the time the put on sunscreen. There is little to no shade on the run and you can fry at that altitude. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. I'll be up there doing the half as a relay (running).

Thanks for the tips! I need to make a decision soon. Not a deal breaker if I don't do the race, but it would be fun to do something different!
By yesterday I felt a little better - not so exhausted. That was after 5 days of being here. Rode an easy Z2 bike ride and felt good. I think I hit the intensity a little too hard too early and paid for it! I have a 8 mile trail run today so things should be interesting!

Any other advice/tips? would love to hear them!

Rode Lake Mary Road today and it was beautiful! Just FYI to anyone - the Lake looks significantly full compared to the last couple years! Guess the rainfall in May really made a difference!

Ugh, not yet. I have a couple big expenses coming up and dropping another 200 on a race plus room plus food just isn't sitting well. Need to decide soon!
