Pat Griskus Triathlon Series
75F / 24C
Overcast
Total Time = 3h 17m
Overall Rank = 160/
Age Group = f40-44
Age Group Rank = 9/11
Event warmup:

I haven't been excited to write this recap because it wasn't one of my better showings but I do it to remind myself of the day and what I did right, wrong or other.

I had a long ride to do for IMMT and I had to make a decision. I did the long ride (90 miles) the day before this race because in the scheme of races I'd rather blow this race than my Tuesday night off road series. And that's exactly what I did - see WT #2 race report.
Swim
  • 39m 10s
  • 1760 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was disappointed with my swim - although apparently EVERYONE said it was a slow swim so I'm not sure how much of it was me vs the conditions. I thought the conditions were fine. It was a diamond shape and it was a little choppy after the first turn but then it smoothed out so no real issues.
What would you do differently?:

I have really started to work on my swim stroke - so we'll see if that helps going forward.
Transition 1
  • 03m 1s
Bike
  • 1h 33m 28s
  • 25 miles
  • 16.05 mile/hr
Comments:

I was tired going into this race - and I knew it but somehow I still expected a miracle. It didn't happen LOL. I rode "OK" for a hilly course but I would have liked to kill it. Next year I suppose.
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Run
  • 1h 00m 54s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

The run is a double out and back and has this nasty hill in it. I don't really mind the ups so much but I haven't really figured out how to make up time going DOWN hills. All things considered I didn't feel too bad on this run.
Post race
Event comments:

SO like I said - I made the decision to continue my long course training and suffer the consequences here. I have no doubt I made the right call - but I still would have liked to finish a little faster :)

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

I signed up for a Sprint in July, an Olympic distance in September, and the Alcatraz tri in October. If I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it all the way.

Keep in mind that the taper period is as important to your body as all of the long hours you’ve put in the pool, on the bike and on the road. It is meant to help you rest, recover and rejuvenate.
