Subject: Bike recommendations for $3,000
I will be stalking classifieds, craigslist and ebay but I will have $3,000.00 to spend on a bike very soon and it's very overwhelming.
I originally thought I wanted to stick to specialized and upgrade from my current Allez to a Tarmac or a Venge but I am becoming
open to other brands, I've been looking at cannondale slice, scott, etc. I've been more partial to the sram components but that could
just be ignorance. I am looking for a bike that is comfortable for those longer tours and triathlons but can also handle the hills and the wind
that comes with living in Texas and riding a lot of canyons. I'd rather not buy brand new, I feel like I can get more bike for my money when
buying used. Just looking for a direction to be looking into!

Thank you in advance!

Get a fitting so you don't waste $$$$ dollars!  Here's a listing of fitters in the deep south, a search on '817' shows 3 fitters are listed in your area; 1 with zero feedback, 1 with 5 stars and another with 4 stars.  Take up to 1% of that $3000 and determine your reach & stack based on what you told us (and the fitter) you want in a bike.  Finding a bike this way may save you a lot of headaches later on.

You can get a nice new bike and avoid EBay and Craigslist for $3,000.

You should be able to get a new Trek Speed Concept for less than $3,000. Great bike!

Bike fit is important first step.

Get fitted so you find a bike that fits you well. This will make you more comfortable which will make you want to train more= being faster/more comfortable.

The speed you gain from a $2000 tri bike to a $7000 tri bike is minimal.
If I were you with $3000 to spend I would look to spend $2000 on the bike and the extra $1000 on upgrades. aero helmet, tire, wheels, hydration setup.

You can have the most aero bike in the world, but a bad fit and you will have more drag the a less aero bike with a great fit. Bike frame and everything attached on the bike is a small percentage then the drag you create with your body. Get a fit first save drag, then select a bike.

I highly recommend buying a used bike. Get fit first like everyone said, and then search for the bikes that you visually like most. I bought a 2014 last year used for 1500 and it was easily 3000 new. With your budget you could also just search for the framset you want and then get the groupset you want too.

EDIT: Check out the group "online swap meet" and "Tri 'n Sell It" on facebook. You will have to request to join them, but plenty of bikes to check out.

Well, the good news. . . a lot of local bike stores have sales that go on during the Tour de France, so it's about to be a good time to be in the market. By July, stores are getting eager to get rid of their 2014 inventory. I would strongly suggest buying from a local bike shop. Buying a bike is a great way to start a relationship, one that you won't get buying used on-line.

I think if you are only going to have one bike.....the Venge is the perfect choice. Great combo of Aero and Road. I have both an argon e118 and a Venge but if I had to do it again. I'd go just Venge and invest more in the components. Throw a set of aero bars on it and you're good to go. Cervelo S series would be a good choice too.

I think that is exactly what I am going to do! Idealing looking for a 52 or 54 older model venge pro... would love to have sram and 11 speed but I would be open to other things to. But I think I'm just going to wait and stalk this site and others until I find the right one to jump on!

I have a E116 and SWorks Venge. Two very different bikes. I used to mostly ride my Tri/TT bike till I got the Venge. The Venge is a fun bike to ride, it's a bit firmer ride but still compliant.

I will see if I can test ride a venge in 2 weeks when I take my Allez for a body geometry fit. I should probably do that before buying... haha
