Musselman Triathlon
85F / 29C
Sunny
Total Time = 7h 25m 53s
Overall Rank = 420/457
Age Group = 55-59
Age Group Rank = 26/29
Pre-race routine:

Eat and sit around for a couple years. Swim 4 time in the 6 months, ride only a couple more times. run a bit but not much longer than 5 miles. I'm so not trained or ready.
Ken got me at 5:30 and we had plenty of time for transition and porta potty.
Event warmup:

Few sprint to get suit loosened up.
Swim
  • 31m 9s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started dead center but the start line was lit 100yds wide so lots of room. Did a good navigating and moving around the wave ahead of us. Hit the canal without hitting a kayak. Canal isn't to bad. Weeds are low and no one has discharged their porta potty. Not crowded and get out fine.
What would you do differently?:

Train
Transition 1
  • 03m 58s
Comments:

Stayed to the side and let the people who trained get by. Stopped at the porta potty for a pee and ambled to my spot. Sunscreen and helmet. Kinda surprised I didn't take longer.
What would you do differently?:

Wasn't good but comfortable.
Bike
  • 3h 35m 59s
  • 56 miles
  • 15.56 mile/hr
Comments:

Tried to drink and eat more. Cliff shots. Stopped half way through to pee. Thought Ken would catch up some where. Felt good but didn't push hard but kept it steady for me.
Transition 2
  • 05m 30s
Comments:

Yvonne handed my socks for running. Totally illegal.
What would you do differently?:

Remember sock to keep Y out of tri prison.
Run
  • 3h 09m 44s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 14m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

Hahaha. Hot like a Musselman should be. Tried to stay hydrated. Found out bananas and coke don't sit well in my tummy on the run. Target was a 12 minute mile walk and run again. Never hit that 12 minute mark. They set up a make shift reststop d/t the heat. Ken caught me at mile 7. We got up to the top of the course and ran till ten mile mark and push him ahead as my left big toe was not having much running at all. Made it to the finish before the cut off. They had let Y out of tri prison and Ken, Connie and Kara cheered me in. Glad to be done.
Post race
Warm down:

Got the bike and headed home. Told Ken to stay in the right lane in case I might need to lose it. Stayed relax and got through enough have beer and pizza at Ken's and sit in hot tub for a while.

Event comments:

Score-this took over management of the event and did a great job. Almost as good as Jeff.

Great job pushing through to finish!  I knew I wouldn't catch you till the run and I questioned that with how many waves ahead you were and the fact that I can't swim.  I really didnt think I would catch you at all!

July in Geneva always seems to be hot or wet.

Glad I didn't have to stop!   Nice job, next year we will train.

My issue is that I am currently deployed and training outside is proving difficult, especially on the bike. I have found a safe 10km running loop but I am struggling with the bike training.

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

This is not an easy task, especially for the “9-to-5er” with family. But you can do it – all without sacrificing your marriage, job or family.
