101 | Subject: Quiet Trainer I currently have the Cycleops Mag Trainer. It gets the job done but I would love to find a trainer that is a bit easier on my tire and more importantly QUIET (or as quiet as possible). Any suggestions in the 500-1000 range? Thanks! |

Pro 6838 Tejas | Subject: RE: Quiet Trainer I don't think I can help with a quiet trainer suggestion. As far as your tire goes, they do make trainer specific tires. Here's an example; http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1168092_-1... . They are supposed to bring the noise down too. |

Pro 5892 , New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Quiet Trainer Before you do anything else, get a trainer specific tire. That will not only make it easier to ride as the wheel is not slipping, but it will also make it a bit quieter. Two other things... get a mat to put under the trainer. You need something that is a thicker rubber, but not too soft (you don't want the trainer to rock back and forth on it). In general, Mag trainers are louder than Fluid trainers. The quietest trainer (that I've used or have) is the CompuTrainer, but it's not cheap (although it's amazing training tool that actually makes winter training fun) |

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Quiet Trainer Gonna disagree here. I have both a Cycleops Magneto Trainer (in Oregon) and a Cyclops fluid trainer (in Vietnam, shipped from here) and in fact my fluid trainer is a bit louder. I definitely would not buy a fluid trainer simply because you want a quieter ride--at least with Cycleops it might not live up to expectations. In fact the magnetic trainer is outside on our wooden deck with no padding underneath while my fluid trainer is on a yoga mat on a solid floor--the latter is still a bit louder. The fluid trainer also tends to wear my tire down more; not sure why. I just use old, yucky tires for the trainer (which is most of my biking in Vietnam). If I had to choose one trainer, I'd actually take the Magneto as the resistance is more consistent--the fluid one tends to suddenly become easier or harder mid-ride. |

Veteran 1900 Southampton, Ontario | Subject: RE: Quiet Trainer funny my experience is the exact opposite. I had 2 mag trainers that were both quite loud and I would get complaints from my family upstairs. With the Cyclops Fluid its quite a bit quieter even using standard tires. No complaints even when on the bike late at night and the house is otherwise silent. |

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Quiet Trainer Guess it's possible my fluid trainer had a part knocked loose in the process of shipping it to Vietnam or something. Fortunately my current abode in Saigon is above a noodle shop where I believe no one lives; if they are around between 5 and 6 AM when I usually ride the trainer, they are already at work in the kitchen down below, getting the breakfast noodles ready while listening to the radio, so I can grind away on my trainer and watch Kona videos to my heart's content. I recently got another Fluid Trainer from a departing colleague, so will test that one when I get back to see if it works any better. |
