Subject: Injured and advised not to ironman this Sunday
i have entered an ironman distance race which takes place this Sunday. I have paid for the race and flights and accommodation many months ago. This week my physio and podiatrist have diagnosed me with posterior tendon tibial is dysfunction and very stressed (but not yet fractured) tibia. This is both legs. They have advised me to pull out, as the risk of a tibia snapping or a tendon rupture is too great. Why then is it that at least ten times today I have decided that I will just strap my legs up and get on with it?? My other half keeps saying things like "it's just a risk they are just protecting themselves legally" and making references to the amount I have spent. I know there is no way I would put that amount of money into another race again as it is just too much to lose. So this is my one chance, which is probably why i keep thinking I should just do it.

So why am I posting? I guess I am hoping that someone out there will have experience of theses injuries and be able to tell me either I am crazy to even be considering it or that they got through by walking the marathon or something.

I haven't had that issue but man I empathize with what you are going through. We know how much preparation -physical, mental, economic- goes into an IM. Hope you figure out a way to.resolve the issues that you are comfortable with. Really sorry

So the advice of some random strangers on the internet who know next to nothing trumps your doctors with decades of extensive medical training and knowledge???  Yes, you sound that ridiculous right now. It's a freakin' race.

Don't be so hard on the AP. When you put so much blood, sweat and tears into the training and told you shouldn't do it - I don't blame them for being upset.

That being said, I would probably check in with a sports medicine doctor to get a second opinion. I've noticed that my sports med doc tends to understand athletes better than other types of doctors, and will probably give a more realistic assessment. I think a lot of non-athletic type doctors tend to err on the side of caution.

If not - did you get the race insurance? Depending on how long it will take to heal you could kick the can down the road and try to get in on a race later in the season - and you might be able to change your flight and pay a small fee.

Best of luck! Hope you heal fast.

I don't blame them for being upset.  Totally understandable.  Doesn't mean one needs to make bad decisions.

I know exactly how he feels.  I had a medical issue pop up three weeks before Ironman Mont-Tremblant last year and I could not get the proper testing done in order to rule out a very serious medical problem in time to race.  So I had to bail.  It sucked.  I spent a lot of money on the race and I was in the best shape of my life.  Everything turned out okay (more or less) but I wasn't about to race or continue training until I got the green light from the doctors.  So I went up to Mont-Tremblant, made a vacation out of it, watched the race, and had a good time.

Got the green light a couple of weeks after IMMT, started training for the Philly Marathon, jacked myself up, and had to have surgery anyway. :-)

I second the suggestion of seeing a Sports Ortho specialist.

My last IM, I was diagnosed with a mild stress fracture on the femoral neck about a month out from the race.  I went to a sports ortho who told me not to run before the race, but that I could do a WALK-run on race day.  I did just that, and ended up with a PR--go figure!  Different injury, but an example of the benefits of seeing someone who truly understands the physical demands of the event and the variety of ways to approach it.

Also, did you discuss the possibility of strictly walking the marathon with your doc?

If all else fails, make it an aquabike.

I'm nursing an injury myself, worsened by the fact that I "felt" ready - only to be wrong. Now, I've added even more time to my long recovery.

Take the time and make sure you're 100% before proceeding.

Best of luck, mate!

I usually have at least one workout per day, sometimes two or three, but I spend about all in-between time eating. I am not gaining weight, but I am not losing weight either. Should I be concerned?

A bad race left me smoldering, but time and a gentle breeze ignited my passion to race again.
