For those of you that keep your flat kit in a water bottle, ever have the lid pop off ?  By pop I mean blow off.   Happened to me awhile back in a race which scared the hell out of me.  I thought my rear tire blew out but the guy behind me kindly told me it was the lid.  I did have the valve closed but didn't think anything in there would build that kind of pressure.  Had used the bottle with fluids in years prior with no issue so I don't think it was a bump or anything like that.  Just curious since I may retire another bottle and switch the kit to that.

my guess would be that you rammed the tube in there which deformed the bottle.  The top most likely popped off after hitting a bump.

Maybe and that's a good thought.   I should probably add I cut the bottles to make it easy to get stuff in / out and then tape them back together.  So wouldn't that reduce the stress on the bottle and or allow air to escape?  Then again duct tape is pretty amazing stuff.

99.9% sure it wasn't pressure that blew the top off, altering the bottle in any way would make it much easier for the cap to come off though.

Any chance your co2 was punctured causing it to pop the lid off?

I don't think so. The one in the inflator is upside down and other wrapped in spare.

I have this one in a zip tied behind the saddle cage: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CG68NQE?psc=1&redirect=true... src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/311THcLrfUL.jpg" alt="" width="74" height="216" />

I have two tubes and CO2s along with adapter and levers in it.  Also has a separate divider for money.

I've never heard of that. I've done this same thing for century rides. I cut a smaller 20 oz. bottle in half (sand off the cut edges) and then put one piece of duct tape around it. I used a wide mouth top so the rubberbanded tubes slide out pretty easy. Splitting the bottle is only a backup option which I've never had to use.

During the race there will be plenty of opportunities to exchange bottles, so I'm thinking about going with the aero bottle and Gatorade bottle and fill up as necessary. What should I do?

In part two of this series of common roadside bike repairs, we show you how to fix a flat tire. Though if you're lucky, a bicycle repairman will wheel by at just the right time.

When people think of hydration in the aero position, the first name that comes to mind is the Aerodrink from Profile Design. I was expecting a pretty quick and breezy review of this water bottle.

Rocket Science Sports has applied its hyper-technical approach to designing a water bottle. The result is a water bottle with dimples similar to those on a golf ball.
