Hockomock YMCA Sprint Tri - Triathlon

View Member's Race Log View other race reports
Wrentham, Massachusetts
United States
YMCA
75F / 24C
Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 08m 10s
Overall Rank = 86/240
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 17/27
Pre-race routine:

Bad night's sleep, woke up 15 min late, pb/raisin toast with a little coffee for breakfast, hammer gel 15 mins before swim start.
Event warmup:

Swam shorter version of the swim course as a warmup.
Swim
  • 09m 14s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 06s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not fast, had troubles swimming straight from buoy 2 to the finish on shore, kept going wide to the left. Made that portion feel like it took forever. But all in all better than I thought I would do.
What would you do differently?:

More swim time. Need to get my legs up higher in the water, get a better breathing rhythm down, and rotate the hips better.
Transition 1
  • 04m 1s
Comments:

Long T1 - almost a 1/4 mile from the shore to transition. I was not the slowest in my AG, but 4th slowest out of 27. I practiced transitions but the swim does make you disoriented... I'd say I gave away nearly 2 minutes in T1.
What would you do differently?:

Bike shoes - velcro should be open already
nutrition - if you're eating anything in T1 make sure the package is already open
Practice practice practice!
Bike
  • 28m 49s
  • 9 miles
  • 18.74 mile/hr
Comments:

I'll climb better next time after switching to clipless pedals. This course is a bit tough, its narrow on a couple streets, not closed to traffic, and the mix of riding abilities plus the time trial start leaves everyone except the top swimmers battling through crowds. I had to make a few passes 3 wide.
What would you do differently?:

Clipless pedals number one. Keep working on the engine two. Nutrition three. Shifting practice four.
Transition 2
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

Didn't feel like a slow transition, it was certainly better than T1. I did have to tie shoes - wasn't willing to go with lock laces on my main running shoes. But overall I was in the bottom 3rd of my AG.
What would you do differently?:

Put lock laces on backup running shoes and go with those
Practice practice practice!
Run
  • 24m 36s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Right out of transition and up a steady hill. First mile was slow, second picked up, and the third I pushed hard. Glad to have the push left but wish I didn't go so slowly in mile 1.
What would you do differently?:

Better nutrition strategy (ie one that doesn't leave me with a side stitch), faster on mile 1.
Post race
Warm down:

Caught my breath, chatted for a bit, walked 1/4 mi, jogged 1/2 mi

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Transitions first. Free time I just gave away. Bike second, I have it in me to go faster. Run third, I conserved energy during a 5k.

Event comments:

I'm not giving an overall rating since it's my first tri and I have nothing to compare it to. I think overall it was pretty good and based on that I'd say 4.

Dave - next is the Westborough Sprint on August 16th. Originally I wanted to do Cranberry Trifest the following weekend but I have a wedding the day of the sprint.

Tri season is in full effect in my house - Sunday was my first tri, and between my wife and I we have 3 more in August. I'm thinking of doing Buzzard's Bay in September as well.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I'm doing the 22 week sprint tri program and the 2 mile bike ride it starts with is not very challenging. I see this as a opportunity to train the right way and challenge myself. Any ideas?

This past spring I realized a few of us were heading in the wrong direction physically. We were getting together for poker games and kids’ birthdays, but that was it.

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

I am trying to go from being 40 lbs. overweight, however, I keep having pain in my knees, ankle, or hip that stops me from exercising for several days - killing my momentum.

”Dang! That water’s cold!” immediately hit me. In these first few seconds, my triathlon goal sunk quicker than my legs and torso had. I now knew this was going to be a lot harder than I imagined.
