Pre-race routine:

Up at 6 am, drank two servings of UCANN, then 1/2 serving about an hour out.
Event warmup:

Short jog, then 200 yard swim and lots of stretching
Swim

  • 820 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Had a good start but got jostled a bit for the first leg. Just breathed on the right side. I don't know what it is about OWS races but I always have ONE GUY that is perpetually in my way. This guy will always swim just ahead of me but can't swim a straight line to save his life and is always cutting me off. Sure enough, this race was no different, except this guy managed to kick me square in the nose during one of his meanderings. After the third time of him cutting me off I gave him a big shove and found a new line. Other than that, the swim went well. Sighted well and swam very little breast stroke as my shoulders felt good.
What would you do differently?:

Keep working here. The course felt long for sure and the buoys were not set up per the course diagram.
Transition 1
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

Pretty quick here. Wetsuit came off easy and my flying mount was great.
Bike
  • 28m 7s
  • 10.2 miles
  • 21.77 mile/hr
Comments:

Started off well and found a few guys to ride near. First two laps were fine but I was starting to get tired by the third. The course was a 3 loop criterium style with 13 turns per loop, so nearly 40 turns over 10 miles. The large hill came off a turn that caused you to lose speed as well. The constant slowing down, speeding up, etc. took its toll I think. I just haven't trained for that and a tri bike is not conducive to this type of riding.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, pace a little better maybe. I don't own a road bike...
Transition 2
  • 00m 51s
Run
  • 21m 7s
  • 3.25 miles
  • 06m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

Started off feeling a bit flat from the bike. First mile at 6:48, really slow. I kicked it up and my legs started feeling a bit better but not awesome. Second and third miles were definitely better but overall I was slow. Some mild stomach cramping towards the end.
What would you do differently?:

I've felt a bit flat since coming back from Michigan and the bike course didn't help. I was a good 20 seconds per mile slow today, which was frustrating.
Post race
Warm down:

Ran about two miles

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I've felt flat since coming home from Michigan and my training has been limited since Boulder 70.3 five weeks ago. Need to really start hitting my training plan now with Harvest Moon coming up in seven weeks.

Event comments:

I'm glad I did the race as it was a different venue/format. There seemed to be some course issues in the earlier kid races but mine was fine. There are some cool parts to the bike course but it can be congested and dangerous because of that as spectators and athletes are very close to each other. I do think the swim and run were long. In my case, this sucks as my swim is pretty average and the bike course is quite short compared to other sprint distances.

As the fog cleared, the buoy that I first saw earlier in the morning was just the first marker in a very long line of buoys that stretched across the lake like a runway for a 747 jetliner.

I read somewhere about "bar ends" to put on your handle bars, do you recommend them? Is this similar to adding clip on aero bars?

The XTERRA off-road triathlons consist of a lake swim, a mountain bike trail ride, and a trail run. I decided to try the AZ Xtreme Desert XTERRA Tri as my 1st off-road triathlon, and my 3rd tri ever.

Well I said that I was not going to do it this season, but I cracked. I broke down and bought a new bike. I went out and bought a shiny new Cannondale road bike.
