so, I've had no shortage of health issues this year, many of which resulted in surgery in June (and 2 missed races). training in the spring was severely impacted due to lousy health, so that hasn't helped either. Since surgery I've been coming back slowly, but still struggling. Now it appears I may have 2 broken ribs due to an accident at home, and just sitting still and breathing is painful. I tried a run this AM and literally took 3 steps before stopping. I have a sprint I was hoping to do in mid August just for fun, and to get myself off the shelf, but I'm not thinking even that may be more than I can handle with the latest development.

This whole season feels like a giant frustrating loss. At this point I'm just going to try to ride the bike on my trainer until the rib thing gets better and I can get back to all 3 sports. Once healthy, I have a plan for getting back in great shape and killin' it next year, but right now it all seems like a long way off....

Sorry for all the obstacles and frustrations, Mike. I can totally relate, though with different stressors. Sometimes trying to train adds more stress when you just can't take any more, physically or mentally. Sounds like your overall health is headed in a positive direction now, and you have a great family behind you. Maybe time to catch up on some reading, take your wife and/or kids to the movies, work on eating healthier, etc. Then, as you said, next year/season is waiting for you.

Sorry for your frustration. My year didn't start off too well with a string of pulled muscles, and I think I broke my rib on a leg press machine.
The only thing I can recommend is to not push it too hard. I tried running with the broken rib but seemed to offset my healing. Ultimately, I had to take 3 weeks off from everything but I never tried the bike. Good luck and I hope you're in full swing for the entire season next time.

Been there and it sucks. Missed most of '13 with tear in calf and '14 due to stress fracture. You'll be back. Hope you heal up quick

Hope you get better. Cracked ribs hurt. It took about a month for my ribs to heal after I cracked them earlier this year. I feel your pain, my year started with bike crash in a race, cracked ribs a little later and now dealing with pulled groin injury.

I did two IM races and all the long hours of training last year without the first injury. Went back to short distance races and ready for off season.

I feel your pain but it's all relative man. My 2015 was destroyed in a bike crash at a tri 6/28 which was caused my someone else. Broken clavicle with surgery, 7 broken ribs causing a punctured lung, I won't take a stroke in the water or a step on a run until October. But it will all heal, if you let it

Different set of injuries, but my year last year was similar. Stronger this year and more dedicated to training, so I suppose maybe last year had its purpose.

I've been there. Too many times!

Focus on what you CAN do as you are recovering. Stay positive-- you'll get it back.

Sorry to hear about the health issues but it will get better. I lost almost a full year after getting hit by a car. Two surgeries, 8 months on crutches. The road back was a B!t(#.

However, just today I turned a 52 mile training ride faster in mph than I ever rode a 20 mile ride pre-accident, including in a race. Would I have preferred never getting hit, of course. But it doesn't mean you can't come back stronger and faster. BTW - I race in the 60-64 age group.

Don't think about how far off it seems. Focus on your next workout, and doing the best you can do that day. When its over, then think about what's next. Then repeat, repeat, repeat. Before you know it you will PR a race and all this will be forgotten.

Good luck and let us know how you are progressing.

It sounds like you're trying to come back too fast, rather than taking the time to heal. That'll only frustrate you worse, and slow your recovery even more. Try to find acceptance of the situation and develop a realistic recovery plan and schedule. You'll be better off in the long run. I also understand how you feel, but as Chris said, it's all relative. I struggled through the 2013 season with an ankle issue that likely stemmed back to an injury nearly 15 years earlier. In January 2014, I had peroneal tendon repair and bone groove deepening surgery on the ankle. I managed to recover enough to participate in a sprint tri only 3 months later, but the 3 mile run was a stretch. From there, the ankle seemed to heal very slowly, and it wouldn't allow me to build any running volume. I changed my July HIM to an aqua bike, and didn't register for any other races. I spent the fall and early winter focusing on strengthening the ankle. 2015 was going to be my comeback year, culminating in IMMD in October. Again, I managed the April sprint, but then the wheels fell off again. I couldn't recover from training sessions, my entire body hurt - joints, muscles, tendons - and the general fatigue was bad. I first had Lyme disease in 2002, so I knew the symptoms. Unfortunately, many doctors don't recognize chronic lyme, and won't treat it. The symptoms got progressively worse until even 5-10 minutes of easy swimming resulted in 2-3 days of cramps in my back. I had to DNS Musselman in July and the same for IMMD this October. I lost my full registration for Musselman and can only get $150 back from Maryland. Add in the room, and I could be out more than $1,500 between the two races. Fortunately my 2 month wait to see a lyme specialist ends in only 2 more weeks, sO maybe I'll be able to at least train again some day.

Hate to read this. I have read that before about doctors not recognizing/treating Lyme. Hope you get some answers and relief from the specialist.

Reading all these makes me feel grateful that I've been basically healthy and free of serious injury for the past few years. I've had a very frustrating time over the past 18 months due to health issues that weren't so much serious as really ill-timed. Until my HIM in July, four out of six races that I'd done in that period saw me sick with colds/flu or injured (non-training related accident) on race day. In another two cases, I felt flat on race day and my performance was pretty far below what I wanted for unknown reasons. It had gotten to the point where I could hardly remember a race where I was 1. Healthy and 2. Did a performance I felt reflected my abilities. I think some of my buddies were convinced it was a mental issue.....but it wasn't. Just couldn't seem to get it to all come together physically on race day. Still not sure if overtraining was a factor, or just really bad luck.

I just tried to look at it positively--my training for the past two years has gone really well, so I must have been building a great base that would be useful in the future, if it ever came together in a race. Finally did two strong races (only two weeks apart) this summer and am glad to be finally reaping the benefits of all that training.

Best wishes to all for recovery--keep doing what you can do and don't give up hope!

Take this with a grain of salt from a stage 4 survivor (and still on meds):

You will recover. You will get stronger. Take it easy when coming back and give yourself a pat on the back for any increment accomplishment you have made. Like others have said....stay positive. The mind/body connection is very strong (at least I believe it). Think about the reasons why you're doing all this stuff: family, health, quality of life, etc. Hang in there; everybody in this thread believes in you.

So sorry to hear about all the injuries you are dealing with. You're a strong guy with a good tri background. Sorry your HIM didn't happen. If you are out for this year make the most of your recovery. Don't push anything - can you do easy stretching? Focus on your diet, start next season lean and mean (just sharing things that inspire me).
Nothing will make it alright, it's OK to be bummed, but if you start your season in Feb. or March it's not really a year away, just 7 or 8 months.

Keep connected to BT.

I had a discouraging season ending accident 3-1/2 weeks ago.  My goal was to do the Long Course National Championships in September with hopes to qualify for the Long course Would championships in 2016.  Those two races were pretty much my goal for 18 months (half of this year and all of next year).  And why not?  The National Championship and World Championship are replacing the only non-Sunday 70.2 race with in several hours of where I live ( I don't race on Sunday for religious reasons).  Now I feel that I am losing two seasons with one accident. Following my accident I wasn't allowed to drive a car or bike for a week.  The return to sports time line wasn't clear but indications were that I would be able to do 15 minutes walks in 3-4 weeks and that if they went well I could start to do light jogging for a maximum of 30 minutes.  One I am jogging I will be able to back on a stationary bike.  Swimming will be the last thing I go back to.  Instead of focusing on preparing for a 70.3 race I am now focused and healing.  It is hard to slow down and take time off, but I know that in the long run it is the most important thing so now went I go for 15 minute walks I tell myself that I am in Iron man training and it helps be feel positive about the direct I am moving.

I hope that you get the recovery that you need and remember that recovery is an important part of training.  :-)

For what it's worth, I feel you.
In April of 2014, I was hospitalized with a PE in my right lung.
It was 2 days after I blew down 4000 m in the pool in 1:10.

On July 5 I crashed off my bike going 32 mph. A broken collarbone and numerous broken ribs. Both front and back ribs. I also pierced my left lung. Internal bleeding - the whole 9.
In mid August I had surgery to install a plate to repair the clavicle.
In late September another surgery to remove the appliance.

In December I had a tumor in my brain removed.

I didn't get in any of my races in 2014. I volunteered at a couple, but mostly took pictures and cheered on my teammates.

I just did my first race in 18 months 2 weeks ago. It wasn't fast, but I didn't stop.
I'm still in base building mode and trying to stay healthy with all the changes.
The residual problems left over from the crash, trying to get my Vo2 working, and my frame of mind.

It's a process, but I'll get there and so will you.

Just crashed on my bike Tuesday...broken collarbone. My season was winding down but I still had 1 more triathlon planned before transitioning over to fall/winter running races. Dealing with the collarbone is rough but I was fortunate that there were no broken ribs...I hear those are pretty uncomfortable.

The ribs hurt, but they were an.annoyance given the pain of the collarbone break with nearly.2" displacement. Once the clavicle got operated on the ribs took center stage

Sorry to hear about your crash, heal up quickly

HANG IN THERE!

Easter Sunday, my gall bladder attacked me and I had emergency surgery to take it out. This took me out of IM Texas. On my second ride after recovering, I had a serious bike crash (doc said my helmet probably saved my life). I had 4 surgeries in 9 weeks. I hear you! It's really hard to restart. Just build slowly.
