Anyone into the Ninja Warrior competition? We've been watching the qualifying events on Monday nights and really enjoying it! Only 2 guys completed the course last night. The first guy who finished said he trains 6 days a week about 2 hrs a day. At first I thought, holy crap! Then I remembered my own insanity when IM training @ 12 to 15 hrs a week often training 3 times a day and often training 7x a week.

Anyway, training aside, it is interesting predicting who will finish and who will not. I've noticed the really muscular guys with huge bis/tris/pecs/deltoids/traps/lats/abs do NOT do that well. Maybe they are too heavy? Seems like lean and slender is best physique.

I also find it interesting that many of the guys have a ninja training course set up at home to train on. Of course the problem is, they are constantly coming up with new obstacles.

Most definitely on the physique. The strength/weight ratio really comes in to play. The guys that are jacked are often 175-195lbs or above, where the long, lean rock climber types have super strong intrinsic hand muscles and upper extremity endurance.

The obstacles this year seem so incredibly hard that it's almost unfair to think someone has to make it through that course plus the add-ons as they progress.

We've been watching when we happen to catch it. Last night it was interesting to see how hard they work and how spent they are for the few who made it to the last obstacle.

I've notices that the gymnasts and rock climbers do especially well-  they're so nimble and usually pretty lean. We did catch the military one and many did not seem as nimble which makes a huge difference.

I have moved to the dark side and do a lot of crossfit now which has a lot of those gymnastic type movements.  In my personal experience, I can keep up with the little guys (and most of the time do better) in the weight lifting stuff but when it comes to body weight stuff?  They kill me.  pull-ups, ring dips, muscle ups, hand stand pushups, etc.  They crank out pull ups and dips like gravity doesn't exist but they only weight 150 lbs.  Add 100 lbs to them (sometimes we do weighted 1 max reps)?  They can barely squeak out 1 - but guess what, that's what I have to do just to get ME up!

Bigger typically means stronger (more muscle mass) but after a point, strength doesn't keep up with body mass and the power to weight ratio get's out of whack.

I always figure rock climbers should be able to kill it on ninja (the gymnasts do well as well as the parkour folks).

My wife loves to watch, so I have seen a bunch of it lately.  Kido is right, smaller, leaner, gymnasts and rockclimbers seem to be the most adept. And I think anyone that is creative has a distinct advantage. We watched one a few weeks ago that had a climbing obstacle that no one could get through.  Once someone tried something different it was game on.

It looks like the competitor pool they are drawing from is not too deep.  There is a limited number of people that can do this kind of stuff, from what I can tell.

Good point. I agree. But hey, I thought the same thing about triathlons back in the 1970s.

Maybe there is an untapped market for Nija stuff that mere mortals could do? There are a few of the obstacles that even I could do....not many, but a few. What if we came up with a course that had 20 'modest' obstacles instead of 10 hard ones and focused more on the time? I guess the problem is only one at a time can do the course so would be hard to make any money. Never mind.

I think a lot of it comes from hand/grip strength! There is no way I have the grip strength to hang on to ropes and pegs like they do. It would be fun to try though.

Watching and listening to some of these shows, it has become apparent that many larger cities have one or more of these gyms in them.  If you think triathlon is a niche market, try this stuff.  But wow, it is fun to watch.

Would love to try it. When I was a kid (9 or 10 years old) I had a death grip and held a national record for girls my age in the flexed arm hang. Wiry and strong like the girl in the picture. Still the same basic build but of course a lot taller and heavier as an adult. Haven't tried this kind of stuff since I was a kid. I think it would be really fun to have a gym where one did obstacles with body weight and had to creatively problem-solve to complete them, rather than just lifting weights and doing other repetitive exercises.

My cousin was on that show, but I honestly don't know how she did, I should ask her. I imagine she did pretty well because she's an award winning pole dancer and owned her own pole dancing fitness studio for a while.  It takes a lot of strength to do that kind of stuff.

That picture reminds me when I was a kid and would try to get from one end of the house to the other without touching the floor.

I'd like to see a ninja warrior type of obstacle course in the crossfit games.

- Warped wall with a 20lb weight vest
- Jumping spide for time
- 10 minute AMRAP of a bunch of obstacles in a row.

Don't scroll down any further if you don't want a spoiler.

It was great! Two guys made it to stage 4. Isaac Caldiero (I think that's his name) won by 3 seconds on the final rope climb.
