Doing an IM distance race later in the year and want to ride the course. This one has multiple turns on the course. When doing a training ride for a certain event and not familiar with the area what do you do to not miss a turn or get lost? I have the provided map and turn by turn directions but what do you do when actually riding? Do you tape the directions on your arm or bike or something else? How you keep track of where you are and when to turn??

I've done a lot of things. I've carried a map in my back pocket and just stopped and pulled it out when I needed it, I've written them on a blank sheet of paper and cut them out and pasted them on my top tube and I've also just programmed them into my Garmin.

I have carried a map in my Bento box and stopped to look at map when not sure of route.

Google the race on Youtube. Some races have videos of someone driving the route. A little boring but gives you a metal picture of the turns and what to expect.

You can also post on the race forum and see if some experienced racers want to ride the course with you.

Good luck.

Write out turn by turn directions(with distances) folded in a ziplock bag and clip them to the bike so I can read them. If there are a lot of turns you may have to flip the directions a couple times.

If you have a bike computer that can download directions, they would probably be online for most IM courses.

Do you have a Garmin bike computer?  I only recently found out that I can download a course to my edge 500 and follow that.  It's not a real map, just a breadcrumb trail but it tells me if I go off course and I can follow the trail fairly well.  Only time it struggles is in a location with lots of roads close together - that can be a bit tricky.

If you've got the right bike computer. . . most major race bike courses have gps files that when downloaded, can give you turn by turn.

I just prerode the new challenge penticton full and half courses, which changed from previous years.

I always look at the maps, write down the names of all the important turns/landmarks, and actually will go into google streetview so that I can look for landmarks as well.

This really helps to visualize the course.

Also, you can dump a course onto TrainerView, and virtually "ride" through a course while on the trainer or something too, can be great if you do any trainer work and have races coming up where you don't know the area.

I think you map it out on mapmyride, and then can use that url to build the course, and it uses google map streetview and plays through it like a video.

I'm too slow for some group rides and of course I want to increase it for races. What exercise/training should I be focusing on?

I usually have at least one workout per day, sometimes two or three, but I spend about all in-between time eating. I am not gaining weight, but I am not losing weight either. Should I be concerned?

I own both a road bike and a tri bike. I am wondering which bike I should be riding during off season training, or does it matter?
