Just out today...
http://m.ironman.com/triathlon/events/americas/ironman/arizona.aspx...

While part of me wanted to experience the mass iconic start of an IM swim, part of me is relieved as getting beat up for the first half of the swim was giving me quite a bit of anxiety. Lots of people upset about this. TTL isn't a great place for a rolling start - we will have to enter from a staircase into the water and this creates problems for people jumping on top of each other and no time to acclimate to the cooler water temps. Interesting to think about!

Strangely enough, IMAZ 09 was about the least amount of contact I've had in any tri with a mass swim start. I was hanging get back, but then the helicopter flew over and I said screw it, it's part of the experience and worked my way up to the front. The cannon went went off, I had a little contact in the beginning and the. Was free and clear the rest of the swim. Note: I did stay a little to the right, but it was still a great experience to be a part of.

Saw this in the athlete guide today.... COUNTERCLOCKWISE!

The race kicks off with a one-loop, rolling swim start in Tempe Town lake. athletes will swim in a counterclockwise direction. Water tempera- tures should be in the low to mid-60s f.
*beginning in 2015, IRonMan arizona will feature a self-seeded rolling start. athletes will enter the water in a continuous stream through a controlled access point at the stair entrance as they enter the water, similar to how running road races are started. an athlete’s time will start when they cross timing mats at the stairs. athletes will be directed to self-seed on race morning based on their projected swim time. Volun- teers and staff will be in the staging area with signs and will assist with this process. self-seeding will not be mandatory, but will be encour- aged.

Yeah, they changed it back a while ago to a counter clockwise swim…the way it usually is in TTL.

It makes the most sense…most people have their panic attacks at the beginning so keeping them close to shore is smart. Will be interesting how the whole thing goes!

so your time starts out of the water? seems odd for a non-beach entry. most races give you a few minutes to acclimate to the water (pee in your wetsuit), but now you've got to cross the mat and get going right away.
