I am fairly new to swimming and am totally lost on the drills. Is there a book or website that explains popular swim drills, their purpose and how to do them?

Search on youtube.  There are tons of videos that show you what each drill does and accomplishes.  Better than reading.

I have been using Swim Smooth, Total Immersion, Youtube, and an underwater camera.
Test, review, compare, repeat.
It's amazing how much the interval training works.

I did find this glossary:

The one-arm drill. This drill will help you with body rotation, breathing, and pull. It also isolates one arm so you can really concentrate on what that arm is doing through the whole stroke cycle.
