  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
What would you do differently?:

draft better
Transition 1
  • 05m 22s
Bike
  • 2h 55m 32s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.14 mile/hr
Comments:

back pain first half limited top end. Should have stood and held armrests sooner for stretch, Seemed to help halfway through, Stopped to pee cost 1 min, Stopped to fix poorly designed FC25 Profile Design BTA bottles water spout cost 1 minute,,,,
What would you do differently?:

stand and stretch early, replace Profile Design BTA with Torhans or Speedfill BTA or frame mount,,,,
Transition 2
  • 05m 40s
Comments:

took time to get HR down before run...had I known the real elevation of the run course instead of the one represented by Challenge I may have quickened transition.
Run
  • 2h 33m 19s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

brutal run. Ridiculous climbs after mile 2 but worse at mile 3-4.
What would you do differently?:

While I liked the expo, swag, food and spirit of Challenge they changed the course after most people regged up.
Post race
Warm down:

near collapse

What limited your ability to perform faster:

heat, elev gain, aid stations far apart

Event comments:

I rate the race and Challenge higher if they we're transparent about the course and didn't make changes after most athletes registered. The aid stations and volunteers were great.
If you look at Savageman they we're always upfront about the course. You knew what to expect. Challenge Pocono ought to take a cue.

Course: described as challenging and a 564' elev gain. In reality it was a 1,385' elev gain. I've never seen so many people walking for so long. Challenge IMO intentionally misrepresented the difficulty of the run as well as changing the course from the prior year ( all three segments 1 month before race). 90d day. Thankfully abundant shade on the course....

The boat was being tossed around. Someone noted that there were whitecaps on the waves. Another guy said, “This is going to be challenging.” I began to wonder what he meant by 'challenging'.

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

The XTERRA off-road triathlons consist of a lake swim, a mountain bike trail ride, and a trail run. I decided to try the AZ Xtreme Desert XTERRA Tri as my 1st off-road triathlon, and my 3rd tri ever.

Well I said that I was not going to do it this season, but I cracked. I broke down and bought a new bike. I went out and bought a shiny new Cannondale road bike.

So after about 10,000 emails, dozens of phone calls, and one pre-race pasta dinner, the 1st meeting of the Steve's in a triathlon finally arrived.
