Pre-race routine:

I got up early and ran 5 miles from home. Then I had a PB bagel for breakfast along with my usual caffeinated Crystal lite drink. Then I drove to Watkins for the race (I had picked up my bib the night before). I stopped at Dandy in Odessa just in case I didn't get there in time for the porta potty line. I parked in the lot above the track, walked over, got in the porta potty line, then got in line. It was a little closer timing-wise than I would've normally liked, but it worked OK.
Event warmup:

None other than an early 5 mile run and walking from the car.

Comments:

Ugh! Just shoot me! I was hoping to run around marathon pace (~9:30), but I was only able to hold that for the first mile. The first half up the hill was just awful. All sorts of people were passing me. Leslie was at the turnaround with sign for the LUNARs and her cowbell. I did much better in the second half and the last mile was the 2nd fastest of the day (I just wanted to be done!).
What would you do differently?:

Fix my running issues!
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing really. Walked around and talked to other LUNARs and VRC people.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My weird gimpy running style and perhaps the 5 miles I ran earlier in the day

Event comments:

This race has really grown. It's a nice course. The fruit at the end was awesome! (Watermelon, peaches, bananas, someone said there were blueberries, etc) Plus there was pizza and some sweet things.

Since it was hot, I did carry water. The nice thing is that probably 90% of the course is in the shade or it would have been a rough day in the heat.

Course: Starts at Watkins Glen HS and goes out Catharine Valley Trail toward Montour Falls. Little bit on the road and then up the trail to the turnaround. All downhill/flat on the way back. They changed the start/finish to both be on the track since the last time I ran this. Plus, the finish was straight onto the track to the finish, we didn't have to do the 3/4 lap anymore!

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
