85F / 29C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 33m 59s
Overall Rank = 15/600
Age Group = M50-54
Age Group Rank = 1/45
Pre-race routine:

Drove over the afternoon before the race. Up early race morning. Usual Ensure plus poptart and then a Honey Stinger Waffle while setting up
Event warmup:

Did a short run with some strides and stretching then a warm up swim
Swim
  • 16m 52s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

At the first buoy we hit the jelly fish and it was a constant battle for the long leg parallel to the beach. I am not talking 1-2 stings I mean constant contact with stings across the face, shoulders/arms and legs. You could not avoid them. Glad I had on a swim skin to get a little more coverage. Issues with stings caused me to get off course and even stop to tread water several times. I just wanted to get to the finish and really didn't care about my time during the swim. Never panicked but really tough to finish the swim in those conditions.
What would you do differently?:

If I had known how bad it was I probably would not have done the swim
Transition 1
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

They were spraying people with water and had spray bottles with vinegar to help with the stings.....really didn't help though. I definitely was not fast through T1
What would you do differently?:

Stay focused and put the swim behind me. Should have been 20-30 seconds faster here
Bike
  • 48m 3s
  • 20 miles
  • 24.97 mile/hr
Comments:

Definitely could have pushed harder. Had the chills for a few minutes once the wind hit all the stings. Starting in 2nd to last wave meant passing alot of people but also getting blocked on several occasions.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder....I definitely lost some focus and motivation from the issues with the swim
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

No T2 time given. Fairly decent from what I could tell
Run
  • 27m 15s
  • 4 miles
  • 06m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Decided to try and hit around 7 min/mile pace. First 3 miles were all in the 6:50-55 range. Pushed the last mile.
What would you do differently?:

Lack of consistent run training through the Summer due to calf issue slowed me some. Overall satisfied with the run. Gave good effort
Post race
Warm down:

Not much....got ice and cloth and tried to "cool" the stings. Packed up bike etc and put it into the car then returned for awards. Team had top 2 racers and 7 of top 15.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I lost focus during the swim due to the jelly fish....hard to prepare physically or mentally for that. You can ignore 1-2 stings but constant stings with tentacles across the face etc. was just alot to deal with. Still have marks on my arms almost 3 days later

Event comments:

Always a fun race at a great location.
