Those pictures are great! I can't visualize how my own broke-down self is going to make it to the start line at a track meet when I'm 85...those folks are just incredible.

You should see some of the pictures on the USMS (masters swimming) site of people who win meets/set national age records. There are women in their 80's who are more ripped than I've ever been or can ever hope to be! I considered myself a decent swimmer, until I looked at the times for last year's USMS "Postal 3000m" (no, you don't swim and shoot--you send in your results by mail or e-mail) and realized that my time would put me near the top of the heap....in the 70-74 division. (I'm 46, and the pace I was swimming--I continued at it to complete the one-hour TT), if I had kept it up for another 400+m, would bring me in around 1:08 for an IM swim--no wetsuit, in a short course pool.) Those ladies are animals!

In April a Japanese swimmer set a new world record in the 1500m freestyle - at the age of 100.

Saw that...I've always said that it's my lifetime goal to have WR (okay, for age) in the mile run and the mile (1500m) swim, and that if I have to wait to 100 to do it, fine. (They are my favorite events.) But guessing that even if I make it to that age, I'll be facing some pretty strong competition, at least in the pool.
BTW math mistake--the swim that would have gotten me a decent place in 70-74 would have been a 1:05 IM swim pace.

I've had the privilege of watching my mom compete in some of these meets.  I'd never believe some of these people are as old as their race bibs indicate.
