I am doing an Oly this weekend with a shore entry. The water, reportedly, gets deep very slowly. Is there a technique for running in shallow water? When do you decide it's time to swim?

There are a lot of "better" ways, but an easy one (if you are in a group start) is to watch the people near you. When you stop outrunning people swimming, start swimming.

Lift your knees high and RUN AS FAR AS YOU CAN.  You can run faster than you can swim and quite a few people (most actually) will start trying to swim WAY before they need to.  You can sometimes gain quite an advantage if you just keep running.

It's somewhat dependent on your height/how long your legs are. Shorter people should probably start swimming a bit before taller people. Just don't WALK in water. At the Vietnam 70.3, the water was shallow enough to do that almost 200m out and I swam past droves of people, mostly taller guys, walking, presumably just because they could! As the woman behind me commented as we exited the water, "It's like a hairy forest!"

Yes, it's called surf dashing / bashing.  As mentioned high knees, if you can comfortable swing your foot a bit to the outside coming forward.  Some people turn sort of sideways as they get too knee deep.   Small shallow waves hurdle until about thigh deep and then dolphin dive.  Once you're hip deep keep daulphin diving until you start swimming.  I was on a beach patrol that had a number of guys who were really good at it.  That was consistently their best event at races.

Work your weakness. In the sport of triathlon, most coaches agree that you should spend the most time working on your weakest of the three sports. For many of you this will be swimming!
