Had planned a swim-run race simulation but logistics didn't work out with our pool hours, unseasonable heat, and...er...other factors, so ended up doing the usual Saturday run/swim workout double. It's harder this year as our pool is only open till 1:30 instead of 4 PM, so not much time to recover between two hard workouts. Had a good run (67 minutes with 25 minutes at 10K effort--kind of a hot and sweaty affair) but one of the worst swims of the year.

Usually I feel fine swimming after a hard run but today definitely did not. Plan was 5 X 400m at race effort, but ended up aborting mission as I couldn't hit any splits and felt like I was just flapping around in the water--replaced some of the race-pace free with slower pulling and even an IM, then went home and napped most of the afternoon. Think I may have gotten dehydrated between the run and upset stomach the past few days, and it finally caught up with me. At any rate my cats were perfectly happy to assist with napping. Won't have that luxury once coursework resumes sometime next month.

Jamie--I think the best part of having a marathon next week is that you can stop training for it (and start taper)!

Plus--just have to share this--have been having a great time watching the Track and Field World Championships on TV. For once I'm located in the right time zone for something!

Another early Saturday. I ran 6 miles at a moderate pace, then biked 20 miles on the hilliest course I've ever ridden on. I think one of the hills was at about a 15% gradient for almost half a mile! I was also supposed to swim, but my shoulder started acting up yesterday and now I can't lift up my arm sideways or else it starts hurting. I talked to my coach and he said it was a muscular problem and that I should just ice it and put on some Bengay or Biofreeze.

Good luck with the volleyball tournament!

Connor- hope the shoulder feels better. Have you been swimming too hard?

HR- Don't cats make the best napping buddies? Our cat seems to want nothing to do with humans, but if it's nap time, he turns into snugglecat. I am indeed looking forward to tapering down. I'm really friggin tired, haha. Easy 6 miles tonight for me, and then tomorrow I'm going to start packing for Utah. I can't even describe how stoked I am!!

Biked 40.5 miles early this morning. Had planned for a bike/run brick, but this ride was the longest I've done, beating out my previous best distance by 11 miles, and when I finished up my legs were toast, so I moved the run to tomorrow.

AFternoon everyone!

Still hot in the desert - not sure when it's gonna end

yesterday ran 12 miles and in the middle of it got chased by a HUGE carpenter bee that kept bumping into my shoulder - eek!

Today was a 88 mile ride.

Started out early and everything was good, met up with my riding partner and we headed out. Unfortunately he started suffering from some heat issues (by this time it was 100 degrees and still climbing) so we changed course to get him home sooner. Still got the miles in but took longer than I planned - didn't want to leave him so we kept it slow and steady. Still managed to have a great ride though - I felt fine and even though it was 102 degrees when I got home, I feel pretty good after jumping in the pool :-)!

Next week I have to start my ride at 7am on Thursday so today was good heat training!

I need to give you and anyone else credit who can ride 60-80 miles on any given weekend. Right now 30 miles is a journey of its own for me. To put it in perspective, it's 84 miles from Orlando to Tampa. That's a little crazy. Congratulations on getting to that level.

Just doing what my coach tells me to :-)!

You build up to it, just like anything else. Fitting it in is the tough part so it doesn't take up the whole day!

Last weekend there was a big group that rode from Phx to Payson which, depending where you start, is around 90 miles...ALL UPHILL! It's crazy when you put it in perspective and I always say that I should just ride somewhere and meet my family to drive me back :-)!

That has actually happened to me....in Saigon....with a water buffalo. (Those suckers are faster than they look. Plus I suck at biking. I hard to really pedal to get out of its way.)

Biked 30 miles with my Teaming in Training peeps.  Repeated a couple of the hills on the course while riding back to slower members.  Followed up my ride with a terribly slow 4 mile run.  I really hate running, so I don't do enough of it.

In the afternoon I did a 45 minute OWS.  Over a mile, but not sure exactly how much.  I need a Garmin 920!!!

Connor, I'm with you...I think my longest bike ride this season topped out at 35 miles! 88 seems pretty daunting to me right now.

5 miles total running for me today, with 4x quarter-mile hill repeats at a pretty hard effort to spice things up a bit. Hoping it's true what they say: hills are speed workouts in disguise!

Happy weekend!

HR, maybe I need the motivation of a water-buffalo chase to improve my bike times! Closest I'm likely to find in PDX is an off-leash dog or very territorial squirrel, though...

We have new 10 and 20 week training plans for the New Year! These mini sprint plans are very conservative and will get any person thinking of training for a triathlon ready to cross the finish-line.

Cotswold super sprint - UK. Lots of bodies colliding, I swam half over someone, got kicked by some bloody breaststroker, and as a mob we poured towards the first buoy.

Already a cyclist and not a bad swimmer, I figured all I had to do was build up to running a few miles and I’d be ready to go. The challenge invigorated me, and I ran out to buy new running shoes.

Since I didn't have much time and since it's a super sprint, am I OK just go to at the training relatively hard through Thursday or even Friday?
