Overcast
Total Time = 1h 19m 52s
Overall Rank = 761/1673
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 16/82
Pre-race routine:

Arrived at 5:45 to set up transition. Returned to car to relax until about 1 1/4 hours before start.

Before leaving car at 1 BioTrust Oatmeal Cookie.

Drank about 13 oz Ucan 50 minutes before scheduled start time.
Event warmup:

In water, swam about 100 yards to warm-up about 15 minutes before my wave started.
Swim
  • 15m 51s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 07s / 100 meters
Comments:

I did better getting off the wall at the start and pushing hard to get away from the mess. I felt good on the swim - very little battling with others and comfortable on the turns and exit.
What would you do differently?:

I need to get more comfortable pushing harder in the swim and even being a little out of breath so that I can go faster.
Transition 1
  • 03m 9s
Comments:

Long run from swim exit to transition. My bike was at the back of the transition area at the opposite end from the bike out exit, so it was also a "long" run from my transition area to the exit, with my bike.

My wetsuit was halfway off as were my cap and goggles by the time I got to my transition area.

I put on my helmet and sunglasses and then took off my wetsuit and then put on my socks and bike shoes.

What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 37m 24s
  • 20 kms
  • 32.09 km/hr
Comments:

I felt really good on this ride and was able to stay aero for most of it (except when climbing bridge) and pushed as much as I could.

It was very foggy as I got closer to the top, making it hard to see through my sunglasses, so I tried to wipe them off and even pulled them away from my eyes momentarily to help with visibility.

I was still passed by some fast, younger racers, but also passed others on the climbs up the bridge.

Drank Infinit bike formula and some water. No tums needed - no reflux issues!
What would you do differently?:

Work on pushing a harder gear at a good cadence, which would allow me to go faster.
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

Rode fairly quickly up to dismount line, got off bike and back to transition area quickly. Bike in was same place as swim in, so I had a short run to transition area, but again had a long run from transition to run out.

Racked bike, took off helmet and bike shoes quickly. Put on run sneakers and knee brace and grabbed everything else to put on as I ran out. Left Sunglasses in transition since they had fogged up in Olympic race and didn't want to be bothered with them.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 21m 39s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 20s  min/km
Comments:

Wow - 6th fastest run out of 82 in Age Group. Passed 20 women in my age group on the run (finished bike in 36th) - knew I was passing them, but didn't realize how many.

Felt great and was amazed that I was running sub 7 minute miles!

Had to stop briefly after first mile to adjust my knee brace which was sliding down my leg.

Had 10 oz. of Infinit in Fuel belt and drank 6 to 8 oz. - did not take any water.
What would you do differently?:

Want to find out if I can use Kinesio tape for my knee for racing rather than relying on the brace which slips down when I race.

Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, drank water, took a few pics and drove back to hotel. Stretched at hotel after showering.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My swim and bike need to get faster if I am going to get closer to the top of my age grouop.

Event comments:

I am so pleased with my race! I didn't know how I would feel after competing in the Olympic race yesterday, but I felt really good from start to finish (and not because I held back in the Olympic race).

I think having the young teens start after me and then have them bike past me or run past me helped push me to my limits of pace.

The venue and course is really nice with plenty of volunteers and roads closed to traffic so I could focus on the race.

My goal is to qualify for next year's Nationals in Omaha, NE and again compete in both the Olympic and Sprint races.

For most age-group triathletes, getting the most out of there time for quality workouts can be daunting. Think outside the triangle to get a little more.

The start of the race I had the jitters. I was watching the other age groups start as they seeded the swim with over 1000 participants.
