Wife & work in DC & we are looking to purchase a house in either Ashburn or Chantilly. Would sincerely appreciate ANY thoughts on commuting, on bike, to DC from either location.

Traffic traffic traffic. Look for a ride share or get ready for an hour+ ride into DC on the Silver Line.

Just edited my original post. I was more interested in bike-commuting.

Ah, well the W&OD would certainly suit your needs. It can get frustratingly congested at times but it would be your easiest (and safest) option for a bike commute.

Agreed W&OD to Custis to Mount Vernon Trail or W&OD to Four Mile Run to MVT.

This would be a very, very long bike commute though.  Pretty daunting even.

My round-trip is 18 miles.  One way from Chantilly to Crystal City would be 27 miles.

Good luck!

Thanks guys. I'll be 40 next year... so this should suit me well.

So your commute from Chantilly to Crystal City is only 18 miles?

No...my commute is from Falls Church to Crystal City.  Round trip is 18 miles.  I can't really imagine commuting 27 miles one way.  Maybe once/twice per week but not everyday.  I would be exhausted by Thursday I think!  Especially since there always seem to be a headwind heading home.

Thanks. Man, it's just that everything's so expensive in Falls Church (where we currently live)!

FWIW - Yes, things are expensive in Falls Church area, Seven Corners, etc but the value of time not stuck in traffic is something to think about.  I know too many people who are just worn out mentally and sometime physically by the time they get in after sitting in traffic for 1-1.5 hours and know they have to do it later in the day.  Anyways --- good luck with your housing hunt.

Yes!  And it is slightly uphill towards the west as well.

I'm on Capitol Hill and ride out to Fairfax.  My commute is 24.5 miles one way.  I'm mostly on trails until the Vienna Station rest area then I transition to open roads from there.  Largely up-hill coming home but mostly down-hill coming in.  It's fairly easy once you get the lay of the land transitioning between the multiple connecting trail systems.
