So here's a question for you. Do you own a wetsuit or do you find it cheaper to rent?

I have a really intense and ambitious season planned for 2016. At least 2, possibly three of the races are going to be wetsuit legal. One, the B2B HIM actually REQUIRES a wetsuit. As you can tell from the signature line, I am NOT small, lithe, or typical triathlete sized. Even if I manage the average weight loss that I want to see by the first tri, in May, I will probably still be between 275 and 300 lbs. And by October I will still be a Clydesdale. In fact, if my time the Corps is any indication, I will probably never not be a Clydesdale.

I have noticed that anything that is labeled "triathlon" seems to run smaller than the sizes I am accustomed to buying in stores. And even if it weren't finding anything bigger than an XL is tough, XXL is scarcer than hen's teeth.

ETA: My scuba instructor informs me that finding a scuba wetsuit will not be difficult nor frustrating. But I understand there is a difference between scuba and tri wetsuits.

Rent!

In your case every time you lose 25 lbs. any suit you would buy will not fit you anymore.....and all you have to do to lose the weight is keep at it.

I agree with the rent sentiment. I bought my wetsuit 6 years ago and it was a good investment only from the perspective of not having to go to the try store every time I need to rent one – financially, even without more than a few pounds weight variance, I'd have only now broken even.

If you buy you'll have a wetsuit to train in. Are you planning to do any open water swimming in a wetsuit before the races? Just something to consider

Also if you rent you'll be paying money to wear something that another person probably peed in. Just something else to factor in to the equation.

I had to buy a new suit each of the last 3 years because of weight loss, but I liked having the suit to train in and I found good deals

Keep an eye out for the XTerra sales on this site

I have about 4-5 open water swims planned for 2016.....in races. I plan to do some practice swims, also.

I bought one, last week. I plan to swim in it a few times, this fall. By the time I rented 4-5 suits (and prayed for a good fit), I could buy the one I did buy. I have less than $350 in a 2015 T1 top and pants. I bought the pants off ebay for $52. I got the top (new) from Emilio (at Desoto).

Perhaps a used wetsuit is the best option. Check out the classified on here & ST. The size you are looking for may not be common but I bet you will find it if you keep your eyes open. I bought my first wetsuit through the classifieds on this site & paid $25. I figured I would get rid of it when I bought a new one but I ended up keeping that first one & still use it.

New triathlete here but I just bought my first wetsuit a couple months ago and did PLENTY of research first. I weighed all of the rent/buy options, negatives/positives. You circumstance is a bit different with the weight loss goals but I can say this... I feel buying a $200 wetsuit is wayyy better than renting a $50 suit three or even two times. And $150-200 can get you a very decent beginner wetsuit. (I got an Orca S5 for $200 out the door, LOVE it!) Anyone can have a tough time finding a wetsuit in their size to rent and I would hate the thought of you counting on renting a suit only to find out there are none available that fit. I'm 5'11" and 165 lbs which seems pretty average and I checked two rental places before one tri and both were out of my size. If you have one hanging in your closet, consider the extra cost insurance and peace of mind!!

You may not be able to find a wetsuit to rent that fits you well.

Practice is key to feeling comfortable doing ows.

My only real issue with this argument is that the suit can be cleaned. Also, I've when people get in the water with a wetsuit on, that's when they pee in the suit to help warm the water in the suit, yes? Well if that's the case, how much pee is everyone swimming thru right at the beginning on any race. And of course we can't forget those that go in the middle of the swim as well...

I've always preferred to own one, that way I can practice in it, so it really depends on how quickly you'll lose the weight.

I got my Vector Pro REALLY cheap in the off season, and often see perfectly good wetsuits used for like $100 bucks. ( can always re-sell it after too )

I have found that when fueling for training properly, I don't lose that much weight, more of that happens in the off season when I am not focusing on fitness gains, as I can afford to have less nutrition better then.

I'm another vote for renting if there is anticipated weight change. Heck, I rushed into my first buy, it wasn't a proper fit and fussed for some time. Had I rented and experimented might have saved a few bucks as well

I'd buy one.  Get an inexpensive one, I recommend the Xterra deal that you can find on this site.   The sleeveless option will work for a wide variety of weight fluctuation (believe me, I know).  I also think Xterra are pretty true to size.  Since you are planning on weight loss, it would be fair to get the one just under your current size unless you are the top of the range.  Especially if you're on the edge at all.

I only speak from my own experience, but it's not a good idea to "plan" on weight loss.   I really do hope the best for you, but I think a suit (even for one season) is worth owning if you have several events planned.   Don't you want to practice in the suit, too?  Also, I think when you're in an odd size, finding a rental will be harder.   One or two events, rent, but not with your schedule.

This is a 'first impressions' review of the Fit2Race Sockeye Fullsuit. From a first wetsuit point-of-view, I was able to dramatically improve my pace over non-wetsuit swims.
