Subject: Vintage Beer

For a long number of years, our main residence was only occupied intermittently.  The kids were off to college and so was I.  JaniceWhoKeepsMeHumble was working at the family business in another town.  So the house was just a large, brick colonial storage unit.  When I finished my PhD and came back to inhabit the place, I gradually got caught up on yard work.  Several years ago when I was clearing out the volunteer nandina bushes that sprung up in the foundation plantings, I found an unopened can of Budweiser.  I had some other evidence that our deck and perhaps even some bedrooms had be used in our absence by one or more neighbor kids (late teens).  I primarily suspected that the beer belonged to the younger son of my next door neighbor.  I have been keeping it cold for him in the back of the refrigerator and trying to think of a fun way to return it.  The opportunity has never presented itself.  He is long gone at this point but he left a collection ofjfive or six unk cars on his father's vacant lot on the other side of his house from us.  They are a classy family. Yes this is in a nice neighborhood.  No we can't do anything about it.  We have tried.

I am now in the process of cleaning out our house to sell it and the beer has to go.  I am coming to the wise people of COJ to come up with scientific or social experiments that would be fun to think about but not actually do before I pour it down the drain.  If it makes any difference, the date on the can is May 16, 2006.

What would COJ do?  What the ideas do you have for this vintage beer?

Hope to hear lots of good stuff.

TW

Unoriginal - tee ball stand, aluminum bat...  You can figure the rest...  Maybe aim for the abandoned cars.

Do you on any firearms? Along the same lines as above.  Maybe use the beds as a backdrop.

Yes.  I own firearms.  A little target practice on the farm might be fun.

Does anyone know what happens chemically to really old beer?  Bud used to make a big deal about their "Born on Date"  and that their beer was fresh and others old beer being "skunky".

Old beer has not occurred in my house

From what I've heard, the taste changes, but it would be interesting to see how much. I've also heard that exposure to light is not good either, but again, that is something I've heard not experienced.  Now I need to text a home brewing friend of mine and see what he can tell me.  I'll let you know what he says.

My husband used to work at a can plant for Anheuser-Busch. I asked him what you should do with the beer. He asked why you weren't already drinking it, and if you don't want it he is accepting donations!

This beer is 9 1/2 years old.  If it were a kid, it would be starting the fourth grade.  It lay in the dirt beside my house for at least 7 years.  Did you tell him that part?

I will probably open it into a glass, take a picture to post here, then flush it all down the drain.  And, truly I am trying to protect your husband from himself when I do so.

Yes! Would love to see what a 10 year old beer looks like!

Why not take one of the cans and put it in the attic or some other hiding spot in the house with a short letter about its history.  Sort of like a time capsule.

You could even print a copy of this thread.

I replaced a fireplace mantel in the basement of our house and found all kinds of cool stuff hidden behind it from when the prior owner built it.

We redid a bathroom in an earlier house.  When I took out the medicine cabinet, there sat an empty Iron City beer can.  That helped explain some of the issues with that bathroom

I like the time capsule idea. Do you have anything else from the neighbor's yard that you could use?

I have made a video of the last few moments of this beer's life.  I am now trying to figure out how to post it with minimum trouble and learning.  The video is on my iPhone.  If anyone knows how to do it, please send me a direct message.

"I'm not gonna drink it, it is Budweiser, after all."  Too funny.
