Pro 6582 Melbourne FL | Subject: RE: Olympic distance 1 week before first Half Ironman Depends on your HIM race goal. Is it an A-race or just a race to go out and enjoy. Also depends on your recovery cycle, everyone is different, 15 years ago I probably could have, today I'd do something like an Oly workout at least 2 weeks out if my HIM was an A-race. |

Extreme Veteran 1123 Sidney, Ohio | Subject: RE: Olympic distance 1 week before first Half Ironman I have done a sprint a week out from HIM the last 2 years and not had an issue. An OLY though takes a few more days so it really depends on the effort you put into the OLY or if your OK with less than optimal HIM. Maybe drop to 80% effort in the OLY and everything would be fine.....just a thought though. |

Champion 9407 Montague Gold Mines, Nova Scotia | Subject: RE: Olympic distance 1 week before first Half Ironman I would say that unless you have lots of short course experience, it's very likely a bad idea to race anything a week out from your first HIM. Shane |

1508 Cypress, Texas | Subject: RE: Olympic distance 1 week before first Half Ironman As you can see below some people race a lot. How they set their schedule reflects their race experiences and goals. If you have never done back-to-back races, then you don't have experience in that area. The results below however show that some people can race back-to-back (weeks/days). If you want to find out if you are one of them then give it a go. If you need to have a solid performance at your 70.3 race and can't afford to try something new then wait for another opportunity to test this out. It however sounds like the Olympic and HIM are both just preparation for your IM though so this sounds like a good time to try it out.2014 Race Results Thomas Gerlach

Shane Thinking Tom Gerlach is not 'most people'. There is some very significant context missing from using such justification. Thomas Gerlach has been racing professionally for several years and was an age grouper for several years before that. He sets his entire schedule up so that the short races are his hard workouts. Part of why he races so much. The rest of the week can be rather easy going. Entirely easy intensity work is not unusual at all. Also missing is just how hard he may, or more importantly, may not be going. In that second race, his power output was more like his HIM power, not sprint tri power. Running a 17:xx 5k might look fast, but the pacing isn't much different than he might hope for in a hard HIM run split. |

Pro 15655 | Subject: RE: Olympic distance 1 week before first Half Ironman Do the swim and bike and head home. The swim will be good practice for your HIM since it's only a few hundred yards short, as will T1 (go through with T2 if you want)......the bike is not far enough to put too much of a load on you. Do your normal training run the next day.....you won't have much to recover from. It's actually a nice little prep for your HIM. Oh......don't take the finishers medal. 643 | Subject: RE: Olympic distance 1 week before first Half Ironman Depends on how fit you are. I'm planning on doing this. My HIM will not be my A race. I already know my times will suck so I'm just doing it as a last bang for the year (signed up for my HIM last week..and it's in 2 weeks, with an Oly a week before). Last year I did the opposite and did a Oly a week after my full IM and a full marathon after that. PR'ed in every race. I also was super super well trained and ready for that. No one could I do anything like that this year. Edited by Blastman 2015-09-10 6:41 PM |

Extreme Veteran 856 Detroit, Michigan | Subject: RE: Olympic distance 1 week before first Half Ironman You got me curious, so I looked up on Daily Mile what I did last year a week out from my first HIM. I was/am in reasonably good shape but solidly FOBOP/BOMOP. A week out, I swam across a small lake and back (a bit less than a mile), biked relatively easy for about 50 miles, and ran an easy 2-mile brick. I took the next day completely off and just did easy workouts the rest of the week. I don't know anything about your training plan, but I'm going to break rank and say that if you treat the Oly as one last test run/training day/shakeout, and are in good recovery shape, do it -- but DON'T race it! It could give you one last chance to make sure your bike, running shoes, goggles, etc. are in tip-top shape -- and you still have a full week to buy any replacements, fix any parts, etc. (For example, I practiced changing a tire a few days from my HIM, and made sure to ride ON THE ROAD afterward to ensure I hadn't broken anything!). But only if you don't race, it's a relatively easy course, and are in the shape to do it. |
