Enumclaw, Washington
United States
Raise the Bar
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 6h 31m 52s
Overall Rank = 91/108
Age Group = 55-59
Age Group Rank = 8/9
Pre-race routine:

Oatmeal in morning. Arrived early and had half a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Set up transition, did a little jogging, checked out the entrances and exits from transition, and checked out the swim course.

Event warmup:

A little jogging and a short swim.
Swim
  • 42m 50s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

It felt good. I went easy except the last 200 yards were I pushed up the pace.
Transition 1
  • 04m 31s
Comments:

Not doing a flying mount.
What would you do differently?:

Could be faster. I used socks since I've never tried a ride this long without socks. Not putting socks on wet feet would help.
Bike
  • 3h 13m 56s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.33 mile/hr
Comments:

Pushed a little harder than I'd planned on the hills, but it felt good overall.
Transition 2
  • 04m 41s
Comments:

Wet feet made putting on socks difficult.
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice more. Sockless shoes?
Run
  • 2h 25m 54s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Followed my plan of a 3-to-1 run/walk. My legs were spent by the end.
What would you do differently?:

Would like to do more running and less walking. Work on run durability. On this day, however, I probably couldn't have gone much faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My current fitness level, especially in the run, is the biggest barrier to improved performance. My run durability is not good. I'm forced to do a lot of walking or I will break down before the end. It was my first half, so I'm happy!

Event comments:

Well organized. Good course (pretty flat by Washington standards). Perfect weather. Great atmosphere. Oh, and there was a beer garden at the end!

Congrats on your HIM.  Sounds like you had a pretty good day all around.  I've had my eye on this race for a few years but just haven't made it.  Good to hear you enjoyed the event.
