Hey there,
I haven't been in training for a tri since 2008, and I sucked then, but I'd like to get started again. Last year I did run, doing up to a 10 mile run, but haven't been running since a year ago. I also have to lose 30 pounds.

Any suggestions as to a good race in the winter that I can aim for? I live in upstate NY, so my swimming opportunities will narrow soon. There is a Masters swim at the Y I can do once a week, but their open hours for adults are at 9PM and I live 45 minutes away so I can't do that. (I get up at 5:30AM for work already.) Also, any suggestions as to a good program to ease me back in. I can bike outside for the next month or so, then the snow comes, so I will have to do spinning class or use my trainer at home. Also, I'm interested in those computer programs that you can run when you are on your bike that show a road and prompt you to speed up, etc.

Thanks in advance for any help,
nancy

That made me laugh !For your trainer i think you are referring to sufferfest videos and trainerroad.Your Y only has adult lap swim every night at 9 or that's when the masters group practices? How about a high school pool or another option that's closer to you.

Any suggestions for getting out of a big funk and getting moving? I have my September back-to-school funk going, (read: situational depression, been in the public schools for a looonnnnggg time) and it's worse than usual this year. I can't get motivated at all.

I always get motivated when I go ahead and sign up for a race. Wish I was more of the self motivating type but it usually takes a financial investment to get me moving in the right direction. I had a long stretch off (about 4 years) thought damnit I'm too lazy and need to do something. I registered for Raleigh 70.3 4 next year and I've been back on it for 4 weeks now.

Welcome back!  For the bike videos, you can't go wrong with The Sufferfest.  I enjoy their sense of humor about the suffering, too.  I combine that with TrainerRoad (allows for "virtual power") and you can get a pretty good trainer training plan going.

- Look at it this way, maybe you were near last, but you did what 99%+ of the population can't do . . .
- When I was teaching, working out was a HUGE stress reliever.
- IF you can't find a place/time to swim consistently, swim whenever you can . . . focus on running and riding the trainer consistently
- You can do it, and you'll be glad you did!
