436 | Subject: First 70.3 I just signed up for my first HIM and am hoping I didn't just make a big mistake. I signed up for the Austin 70.3 and with a new baby at home training is difficult to say the least. I've enjoyed reading the threads from other parents and am hoping that I make it through without my emergency contact needing to be called . Has anyone else raced Austin and is it a good course for a newby? |

Expert 1644 Oklahoma | Subject: RE: First 70.3 I spoke with a guy several weeks ago that raced Austin. He said it was his fastest bike split ever. Although he said he didn't care for the run very much. I always heard the roads where terrible in Austin but he said they weren't great but he has rode a lot worse. A friend of mine is scheduled to race Austin this year too. Good Luck! |

Veteran 434 Apex, NC | Subject: RE: First 70.3 I raced Austin. You've already put down your credit card, right? If that's the case then it's the best race ever! JK... sort of. It's a fine race for your first 70.3. The swim is straight forward. The bike is really rough and it's hilly but not terribly hilly. The run is a little rolling. The temp can be a problem. Here's my report. Ping me if you have specific questions. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... |

436 | Subject: RE: First 70.3 Thanks, I'll definitely read all the race reports. I've been talking about it for weeks and put my cc down yesterday. I've only raced Olympic/USAT races so I'm looking forward to seeing how an Ironman/M. race differs, other than just being a lot more expensive! |

Veteran 345 Ocean Springs, MS | Subject: RE: First 70.3 Austin was my first 1/2 back in 2012. I think I have a report up on BT. It's fine for a first 1/2. The swim is not too challenging, but certainly not downstream. The roads are rough on the bike, but you'll manage, and the hills were tough for me since I was so new to riding, but I didn't have to ever get off and walk (which means you won't either Most people complain about the run, but it was my favorite part of the race. The 'hill' is not bad and what goes up must come down. And I liked doing loops because it meant a lot of crowd support. I liked that it was not a particularly popular race also, because there were fewer really 'competitive' racers out there, and everyone was extremely friendly to the newbies. And Andy Potts put the finishers medal around my neck, so that was pretty cool! Enjoy it and don't stress (easier said than done). It will inspire you to do more, and soon you'll be completing a full IM! |

Elite 3088 Austin, TX | Subject: RE: First 70.3 I've done Austin several times, including the first year before Ironman took over the branding. The comments so far are solid. The swim is basic with decent water quality. The bike has quite a bit of chip seal and there will be a few rough sections of road, but I think they're a bit better than in years past. The run is okay. Three loops does give you plenty of opportunities to see and be seen. The hill by the dam will slow you down. Some reviews complain about the split transition, but if you pay attention and follow the guidelines, it's really not an issue. |

Member 98 Baton Rouge | Subject: RE: First 70.3 Another Austin veteran here. I've done a few others and I put Austin near the top. I was fortunate enough to do it 2012 when the air temp suddenly (and very unexpectedly) dropped to 45 degrees that morning. People couldn't wait to get in the water b/c it was warmer. It made for a chilly bike start and a great run. Yes, both are hilly, but I've run flat course that I hated worse. Good luck with training...a the new one...i can relate (somewhat being i'm not the mother) |

Veteran 434 Apex, NC | Subject: RE: First 70.3 Oh wait! I forgot the most important part. You MUST go to the Shady Grove restaurant Sunday evening after the race, sit under the big trees, and order the Truck Stop Meatloaf. It's in the USAT rules. Your results will be nullified if you fail to do this. It's optional to order everything else on the menu and drink a bunch of beer (as I did). You're welcome : ) |
