The goal of an standalone marathon is to run as fast as you can for 26.2 miles.  The goal of an IM marathon is to not slow down as much as you can for 26.2 miles.  Sounds the same but it isn't.  You CANNOT run as fast as you can during an IM marathon.  It's all about mitigating how much slower you're going to run.

Your body is fresh starting a marathon.  Your body has 2.4 miles of swimming and 112 miles of worth of cycling and race execution decisions before you even begin running the IM marathon.

That's what I kind of figured, I thought it was more. But like you said - it sounds clear, but may feel different during the race or training.
Thanks,
Mary

I started Triathlon training in January of this year and completed my first HIM in April. So for me 4 months.   I had not previous swim or bike training, but I have been a runner for 30 years and have complete two full marathons and a dozen half marathons.  I did well in my first HIM and don't feel that any more time would have made much of a difference in my first HIM.

I'm very different than the norm. First tri in 2007. First 70.3 in 2009. Followed by 8 more 70.3s. Qualified for 70.3 world championships and raced in Aug. Now that I've met that goal I'm signing up for my first full. I was completely happy to take it slow. I have lots of years ahead of me (even at 45) and was completely happy to focus on the 70.3 distance and leave the whole full thing for later.

I had the last 2 seasons essentially off due to injury, had a decent bike season the year before that.

This season I completed my first sprint triathlon, and end of march a BRUTAL half marathon where I took 2 weeks off of training afterwards as I'd gone and beaten myself up pretty well with the pace I was trying to hold, and had only started to run again really beginning of jan after 4 months solid in the gym rehabbing my knee.

End of august I did a full iron distance triathlon in just under 12 hours, where the second half of the run I fell apart, as I only decided to do the race 6 weeks out, and had trained up for a solid HM 5 weeks out ( which I nailed at just over 1:40, an 11 minute improvement over my march HM ) and only really had time for one long run, and ran into a TOUCH of nutrition issue after the second half of the run started. We also had a rough weather day on the bike with tonnes of headwind, lots of climbing, rain, and stinging hail :p

It can be done, but listen to your body, get in the key sessions, and lots of rest/recovery.
