I have a hairline crack in the fairing on my rear Bontrager Aura 5 Wheel. How bad of a problem do I have? can it be fixed or do I just ride with it as long as I can?

I have no idea......but a Ron White comedy routine comes to mind here and it always makes me laugh.....

You can ride it all the way to the scene of the crash.

If it's just a carbon fairing (I can't remember, but since HED made the Bonty's it's likely) then it shouldn't be a structural problem.

Sucks though

I had this exact problem on that exact wheelset.

Mine happened cause someone, either the previous owner, or their bike shop, tried to hang it from the wheel, and then realized they can't from what the mark looks like.

GOOD news is that it's a non-structural fairing, so it's not going to cause stability issues.

Bad news is that if left untreated, it could spread, especially if a rock or something was to hit it right at that spot while riding, since it's SLIGHTLY compromised already.

My bike shop took a little bit of really high grit sandpaper RIGHT at the crack, then used some 2 part epoxy and applied with a toothpick, all it really does is stop the crack from spreading, as that's all you need it to do.

So far zero issues, and I'm WAY more comfortable with it.

Good luck!

As mentioned, it's not a structural issue.

Personally I'd drill a 1/8" round hole at each end of the crack (spreads the stress and keeps the crack from propagating), and then epoxy the crack back together, or tape over it with Super33 electrical tape.

Going to try the epoxy glue. The 1/8" hole makes since, will do that first. Thanks for the input.

My back wheel needs to be trued up. It has a slight side-to-side wobble, and I feel at times like I'm going to lose control when I ride. Is this something that I should only trust to my LBS to do?

The wheels are my first area of concern and I have started to shop around. I find it nauseating to think of spending the same amount for wheels as my bike. Any help?
