Subject: Curious about DQ's
I was looking at the results of the Augusta IM 70.3 and noticed several (more than I would have thought) DQ's. I'm not talking about DNF's. These were DQ's.

Admittedly, I know very little about triathlons. I could see getting one for cutting the course or multiple drafting penalties. What am I missing that are the most logical explanation for these?

Thanks. I was just curious.

Music players/phones, fighting (was there a brawl or something!), crossing double yellow line on the road (DQ?)

If you take a look at the USAT rule book or the race athlete guide, they give you a pretty good idea of what the DQ offenses are.  A DQ can be a culmination of multiple rule violations such as drafting or littering or one major one such as not completing the whole course, crossing the center line of a road, or not buckling your helmet while on the bike.

A racer can get DQ'd for riding without a helmet at any time while on the race site. That includes pre and post race. Next race take a look and you'll see at least one or two people riding from the parking lot to transition without their helmet  on. Grounds for a DQ!

Don't know about Augusta, but most common ones I've seen over the years are helmet/helmets straps and cutting the course (deliberately or inadvertently).

Also saw a classic one a few years ago when a competitor told some volunteers to F*** off when a USAT official was standing right behind him.  Got DQ'd on the sport for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Most of the common violations (drafting, position fouls, etc) are variable time penalties rather than automatic DQ''s,  They're three strikes and you're out. so you have to work pretty hard (or be pretty dumb) to get DQ's for something like that.

WTC does a good job of updating their rule book every year and making sure it's linked into all of their race web sites. Take a look at it sometime. It's very clear on which infractions "shall" or "could" result in DQ. I posted my favorite one below....no contrived tie's allowed!

(c) The Head Referee, in consultation with the Head Timer, will use all resources reasonably
available to decide the final position of every athlete. Information from technology may be
used to assist in the decision-making process. The Head Referee or Head Timer may decide,
based on the available evidence, that a Race is tied if there is no reasonable way of clearly
determining which athlete crossed the line first. Results of tied athletes will be sorted
according to Race bib numbers, provided, however, that athletes who finish in a contrived
tie situation (e.g., where no effort is made by either athlete to separate the athlete’s finish
time from the finish time of the other athlete) will be disqualified;

I was surprised by the sheer number of them. It just seemed like a lot. Like I said, though, I don't know what "average/normal" means in this realm.

Thanks for the info.

OK...let's look at this another way...........

How many people "normally" get DQ'd from a typical 70.3? If it's more than 10, that fact would surprise me. That was my only point in posting this.

This is my biggest personal pet peeve. Triathletes will wear their helmets in races and in training, but not when riding their bike into transition, where some of the most disorganized traffic chaos can occur, I have never understood it.

BUT as an RD, if they start to DQ off that, they will lose registration numbers its why 99% of RD's do not enforce that rule. People sometimes forget that race companies are running a business not just putting on a race.
