Subject: Riding with a trainer axle?
It was a cool, windy, rainy day yesterday so I put my bike up on the trainer for an hour. It's the time of year when I'll switch back and forth. I know it's not a big thing to switch out the trainer axle but is there any reason I can't ride with it outside?

It's my understanding that the only difference is a very slight amount of weight. Originally, all of them were basically the same in design, but newer, "high tech" ones started popping up to appeal to the weight weenie crowd. Other than a few grams, a trainer axle is no different than one for the roads.

Agreed. I even race with mine because it is only slightly different. Than my actual skewer. I just leave it in and will keep it that way until I get some race wheels.... Then that will ebe a diff story

The day I bought my KK Road machine I swapped out the skewer, and I have no idea what I did with the original. That almost 4 years ago.

I haven't taken mine out in years. There is no issue to be concerned with, other than 1oz heavier or something like that.

To be a little more accurate, it's not an axle it's a skewer. The axle (the weight bearing rotational center of the wheel) is part of the hub mechanism.  All the skewer does is hold the wheel in place.  It's not weight bearing, so an ugly training skewer is just as effective at doing that as any other skewer.

Maybe a dumb question......

I'm buying a used trainer, tomorrow. No training skewer. Can I purchase one of these pretty cheap? I'm assuming I don't want to use the original skewer in my new bike's wheels......but, I don't base that on any knowledge.

Sorry for the mini hijack.

The only reason why you don't want to use the original skewer is that it may not actually be able to sit on the trainer properly. If you don't have one and your bike's skewer doesn't work, you might have to order one online (or your LBS might have it in stock). And yes they are cheap-- about $10.

I paid $12 for a Kurt Kinetic skewer on Saturday at my local shop.

Another reason is that trainer skewers are metal on both ends. Many other skewers have plastic end caps. They can fail if clamped into a trainer.

^^^ Listen to Don, most skewers that come with your bike are not good to be used on the trainer.

Or Ignore this and we'll wait for the thread in a couple months titled "Was on trainer one minute and crashed into the TV the next!"
