I did it! So excited. Exceeded my expectations for overall time, managed an AG 2nd place finish, too.

Not a huge race, but fairly well run.

Swim was horribly cold, air was even colder, bike sucked due to wind that was mostly cross, but head in some poor spots. Fairly flat course. Didn't feel toes until 3 miles into the run. Also a fairly flat course.

AG finish: 2 (35-39)
Swim Rank 45
Swim Time 38:26.75
T1 3:58.45
Bike Rank 9
Bike Time 2:43:44.12
Bike Pace 20.5mph
T2 3:28.69
Run Rank 22
Run Time 1:48:50.95
Run Pace 8:18/M
Overall Time 5:18:28.96

I was 11th in the "overall" division. 8 Elite racers beat me, too. So all, in all about 200 total if you include the handful of relay teams (only one team beat me) Then I'd be like 20th place...

I'll have a couple of small ones next year, but training for IM Wisconsin I think. Haven't signed up yet. Hoping it hasn't sold out...

OK, well set up race in some ways. Wasn't sure about having separate T1 and T2 locations, but it worked out ok. Was also not a fan of leaving my bike overnight, but that was a non-issue. They surely do it that way because the location is not good for 200 bikes showing up early race morning.

Bike course was fairly well marked, there was one point where three of us missed a turn but knew so within 20 yards. It was at 53 miles, so brains maybe not working the smoothest, and it wasn't painted on the road and marked with RaceMaker Productions signs like EVERY OTHER turn for the race. There were three points for fluid, and I'm not sure If i hit the wrong one up or what but I think they all had water, and I was under the impression the one I asked at would have gatorade. Gatorade is part of my nuytrition plan, so I was a little worried. I had enough on my bike to barely make it.

Run course was also fairly well marked, and there were water stations fairly well spread out with a little nutrition at a few. The water/gatorade came in tiny dixie cups and I had to ask for two at a couple of stations. Had it been 5-10 degrees warmer that could have been a mess, because I felt like I had to go longer than I wanted between a couple of stations. I like to train with what I race with, so have been training with Heed. They are sponsored by Hammer Nutrition, and their website said Heed / water at stations, but that was NOT the case.

Swim was an OK place, too rocky for a beach start, but that's what we did because it was friggin cold. Swim was ok with me, couple of yellow markers that were small and hard to see and a few big orange ones. Lost a yellow one overnight, and an orange one was drifting, so there were special instructions that people didn't seem to have problems with. They had westuit strippers,

They had porta-johns at a lot of locations, for those that might need them. No beer afterwards, so that sucked. There was pizza and soda or water and chips. The awards ceremony was to be at 3:30 and didn't start until I think just after 4.

Lee, is the Race Director and he's an extremely likeable guy who knows what he is doing, and easily accessible if you need to get ahold of him.

I was at that race.  Not racing, just volunteering.  Body marking in the morning and handing out pizza/soda/water in the afternoon.  A couple members in my tri club were doing the race as their first 70.3 also.  I'm hoping to make it my first 70.3 next year (if I can get my swimming figured out ).  I was talking with Lee after the race and he said they lost a lot of people this year because of the date change with IM Louisville - there were closer to 500 racers last year.

Glad you enjoyed the race and congrats on your first 70.3!

I think you maybe marked me? I definitely got pizza. I know you probably marked a lot of people, but I joked with my marker (it was dark and early) about hating calf markings because they just make me feel bad when a lady with 75 and an IM tattoo on her calf blows by me on the bike...

Have a few pictures from the race! Wife did this cool thing on Facebook where she created an event and we posted to our friends that if they just commented that they were interested we'd send them an invite to the private event. THEN when we made a million posts on race day it didn't flood every friend's feeds, only the ones that "asked for it"...

Anyway, first picture is of my helmet. I wanted to do something special so I talked to the principals at the two elementary schools that I work at and we came up with a reward plan that allowed some kids to earn a spot to sign. The kids loved the idea and I was thrilled to race with their names on my helmet! Wish I could have had every kid sign it, but I'd need a bigger helmet!!! Also got my wife and some coworkers on there!

I was there too! I recognize your kit and almost made a comment on the run...but I wasn't feeling too good! So I just chuckled to myself.

Congrats on a GREAT finish, especially for your first.

I have to tell you, I like RMP and thought the race was well done (again). There were a few hiccups (such as the gatorade thing and the absence of food at the run turnaround). I did this race last year, and will attest that the water this year was about 10 degrees warmer than last year. However, overall the conditions really were not great. That bike sucked the life out of me-- those last 20 miles were fighting the wind.

I was a bit disappointed in my performance. I gave up 12 minutes from last year on the bike, and came off feeling worse. Hit the wall at mile 10 of the run and dragged into the finish. 14 minutes slower than 2014. Perhaps it was the wind, or perhaps my fitness was not where I thought it was (or both).

Anyway, it was still a good race.

Thanks! I do like RMP races. Wife just did the one in Litchfield (First overall woman in the sprint) and they also did a great job there.

That last bit of the bike WAS brutal. I was 21.X average well past the halfway distance.

Did I say "good race" or anything to you when I saw you on the run? I'm that guy that likes to talk to EVERYBODY during the race...

This kit is actually pretty nice and not horribly priced. I like it a lot. That, and so many people commented on it! It's nice because it hides flaws well, and I need that! They have a cool kit that looks like incredible hulk-ish too... I know they say nothing new on race day, but I had only tried it on before the race! Some things, you can just tell will work well...

And I do remember marking you - I always hate that about the age thing on the calf too.
