Sunny
Total Time = 2h 58m 55s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 40+ Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 3/8
Pre-race routine:

Waffles and diet coke for breakfast. Race was about an hour from home so had to get up and moving a bit earlier than usual. Had an issue with wife's tire not inflating with my new pump but mechanics on site got her all set up. Long walk to transition from parking but got there in plenty of time to get everything setup and ready to race.
Event warmup:

Nothing really. Had a bit of a wait to get in the water.
Swim
  • 39m 17s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 37s / 100 meters
Comments:

Normal swim for me. Still my weakest event. I have to force myself to not go hard or I will tire quickly. I caught myself doing just that early on but slowed my stroke and my breathing. My sighting was probably better than usual. I basically hit every buoy. One of them was hard to see due to the sun but I just followed the swimmers ahead of me and finally picked it up.
What would you do differently?:

Working with my swim coach to try to get my times down but with this swim I was just fine with the 39 minutes.
Transition 1
  • 03m 3s
Comments:

Nothing great. Normal transition. I will note here (and maybe later), that I missed second place by about 1.5 minutes. I could make up some of that in transition.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe just speed it up. I took a gel and some water. Had to grab a towel and wipe my eye as I was having trouble seeing due to some water in my goggles during the swim.
Bike
  • 1h 15m 47s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.67 mile/hr
Comments:

Ok bike for me. I really wanted to average over 20mph but 19.7 is pretty close. Still having trouble staying in aero on the new bike. Kept to coaches plan in attempting negative spit. Upper zone 2 for first loop. Lower zone 3 for second.
What would you do differently?:

Get a better fit so I can stay aero. Would have helped with the wind on this course.
Transition 2
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

Normal T2. A little slow at run out trying to get my chew open and eaten.
What would you do differently?:

Open the chews before the race.
Run
  • 58m 49s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

I am a big old Clydesdale and don't think I have ever run a stand-alone 10k in under an hour so this was crazy good for me. I have been working with a coach for the last 4 months and I think I am finally seeing the results. The weather helped too. First really cool day here in Houston in a while.

Pace per coach and kept in upper zone 1 lower zone 2.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Could maybe push a little harder but very happy with results.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank a few cups of Gatorade and walked around a little.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bike comfort.

Event comments:

This was an Olympic PR for me by 15 minutes. Now onto the 70.3.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.

If you are calm while everyone around you is losing it, you probably don’t know what the hell is going on.
