DC | Subject: How long is your bike commute to work? Just trying to get a sense of whether this is doable for me... three times a week. Mine is currently 12 w/about 500 feet of climbing on the way home (D.C. really is like a swamp). We're moving & will now be 20 miles one way w/just under 1,000 feet of climbing on the way home. |

My bike commute to work is currently 12 miles(one way) with about 1200 ft of climbing, about 1000 ft of climbing on the way home. My last job was 19 miles(one way) I think it had about 1600 ft of climbing. So I would say your commute is doable. What limits me is daylight now, I'm just not doing my whole commute in the morning in the dark. My roads are too crowded and not good enough conditions for me to feel safe about it. However from May til late September I do it when I can. |

Regular 1161 Hamilton, IL | Subject: RE: How long is your bike commute to work? lot of things would have to be perfect for me to do a 20 mile commute regularly. I carry a decent amount of stuff and it gets pretty cold in the winter and sometimes weather means I have to ride the mountain bike. Darkness is another issue, but I ride in the dark with LOTS of lights all of the time. Personally, I wouldn't do it, even if only 3 days a week. That would be 2+ hours a day cycling and then I wouldn't have enough time to get my other training in. 12 seems perfect, too bad you have to go to a further commute. |

I have an option of 14.5 mile through the beautiful biking trail, but I need to get faster to take that one, as I only have 35 minutes from my kids school to work. Mary |

Darkness in the morning is no problem for me, but traffic is crazy in the afternoon, so afternoon darkness is a no-go. But my work shift is early enough that I don't ride or drive home in darkness. 20 miles one-way? I'd probably do it less, but I'd still do it. |

Yes, 12 seems almost ideal because I could add more mileage or run to or from work. Still, I'll be 40 next year & perhaps I should see this as an opportunity to HTFU in my age-defying trek! I forget to mention: I would be riding on a bike-dedicated trail. Would I be a fool to not take advantage!? Edited by Porfirio 2015-10-07 11:53 AM |

I should really just walk Same here, but I live on the edge of the city and my commute can easily turn into a 20-30 mile ride outside of the city. I live right off the Ironman Wisconsin course in Madison, so my commute can become a very solid training ride before, after, or between work shifts. |

It's still far but i don't see any reason why you shouldn't give it a go - try it out. See if it's feasible. Even if it is not any everyday thing ...

Also look at net time not gross. How long will it take to drive30-40 minutes? Bike it in about 1:10 ? so your looking at getting 40 mile bike training sessions in about an addition 50 minutes a day because you would have to drive to work anyway. |

Veteran 434 Apex, NC | Subject: RE: How long is your bike commute to work? Mine is 20 round trip, only about 700ft vert. I only do it once or twice per week. Off season I'll do it maybe 2-3 times per week. I wouldn't do it everyday during the season because it would suboptimize my other training. During the season I'll often do this: Tue Drive to work bringing bike, spare work clothes for Wed, and bike clothing Run at lunch (usually intervals, this is the key workout for the day) Ride 1 hour home fairly easy leaving the car at work Wed Ride into work, often increasing the ride to 1.5 hours (usually intervals, this is the key workout for the day) Swim at lunch Drive home If I can't get in a long enough ride on the weekend I might ride back and forth on Fri. The Tue/Wed thing is a really efficient way to get in the miles. Edited by smoom 2015-10-07 2:18 PM |

72 | Subject: RE: How long is your bike commute to work? Currently nine is about 35 feet and 14 steps, and that is bed to keyboard . but when I did commute to work it was 20 miles each way with about 1200 feet of climb. It was great in the morning to wake up, and even better to ride home and work the stress out. |

Subject: RE: How long is your bike commute to work? 16.5 miles each way with about 350 feet of gain. About 7 miles of it is on a dedicated bike path, but about half of it is empty where you can go fast, and the other half constantly has walkers, dogs, or you cross little side streets so you should slow down. Maybe 2 miles of it is actually on the road where I need to be in the lane of traffic, and the rest has a big shoulder or a bike lane. As a cyclist only these days, I would love a 20 mile fully protected route with 1k of climbing. Probably tougher for a triathlete to balance in swimming and running though. |

We dont have a shower in the office, so I am a little worried about smelling up the joint. I heard baby wipes work (which is terrific with a 4 month at home I have a ton of those), but anyone have any suggestions other than baby wipes, DO and cologne? |

I do enjoy it most of the time, but only do it 2-3 times per week. My husband and daughter commute the other way about 15k on a much nicer route with less hills- takes them about 45 minutes. I'd do that one every day if I worked where they do. |

I should really just walk Same here, and I have walked it in the past but often don't leave myself enough time in the mornings. If I ride, and I keep the bike in my office, it takes about the same time as it does to drive, park the car, and walk in from the parking lot. Another way to look at walking, is that I can get a 30 minute walk for only an extra 20 minutes of time invested. Either choice saves lots of money when the car stays at home. |

Baby wipes are okay for the pits, I used a facecloth and pretty much gave myself a sponge bath then dried off with a towel. Then deodorant and baby power and I would say that I was reasonably fresh. If it was smokin hot or if I had to attend meetings I had a shower at a truck stop (I work in an industrial area) but that was expensive at $10. Another option is a day pass at a gym which is normally about $5. I also left absolutely everything at work so I dint have to wear any work clothes on the bike or carry anything in a back pack |
