Overcast
Total Time = 1h 23m 16s
Overall Rank = 8/682
Age Group = M50-54
Age Group Rank = 1/59
Pre-race routine:

Up early for the drive over. Usual pre race fueling.
Event warmup:

It was really windy. Ran about a mile to warm up and swam a few hundred yards while waiting for my wave to start
Swim
  • 14m 34s
  • 600 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

Goggles filled up twice on the way to the first buoy and I had to stop and adjust them. Had been fine when I was warming up. Caused me to fall back in the pack a bit and came out 10-15 seconds behind top swimmers in my wave.
What would you do differently?:

Not have leaky goggles
Transition 1
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

Long run to transition. A little trouble getting wetsuit off but not bad.
Bike
  • 46m 18s
  • 18 miles
  • 23.33 mile/hr
Comments:

Getting on the bike I thought one of the top guys in my AG was ahead of me so I pushed a pretty good pace/power. He came out of the water ahead of me and I am typically a little stronger on the bike than he is. Never saw him...even at the turnaround so no idea if he was ahead or behind me. Definitely kept me pushing the pace. Crosswinds were tricky and didn't help with speed.
What would you do differently?:

Solid ride. Crosswinds wer tough. Power in the 250 range most of the ride/
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

Pretty solid T2
Run
  • 20m 7s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

Wanted to break 20 min and felt pretty good throughout. Still did not know where the other guy in my AG was. Finally saw him heading out toward the loop on the course as I was heading back so I knew I had several minutes on him. Must have passed him in T1. Miles were pretty consistent in 6:30-36 range and pushed the last few hundred yards.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing....solid run.
Post race
Warm down:

Went for a 20 min run with a team mate to shake out the legs. Changed, cleaned up transition and hung around for the always fun post race party and awards. Won another "TIKI" for grandmasters win as team mate bumped up to win masters.

After the last few races being sub par and mentally not being strong I felt good throughout and was glad to finish the season on a high note!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing....other than the swim issues I raced well.

Event comments:

One of my favorites. Always a competitive field and a great post race party awards ceremony. Top notch all around!
