Madison Jaycees
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 19m 49s
Overall Rank = 48/305
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 9/27
Pre-race routine:

Up at 3:30am - roughly 1.5 hrs to Madison. Loaded truck and racked bike the night before. Getting ready to leave in the morning, I checked my bike and had a flat tire. Drove down to Madison and fortunately the bike support was already set up and changed my tube. Had a bagel/PB and coffee on the way. Got there early enough for rock-star parking (my obsession). Checked in and got ready before the crowd hit.
Event warmup:

Swam for about 10 minutes - water was very nice. Tough getting into the wetsuit - must have shrunk....
Swim
  • 16m 3s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

First OWS of the year, first time in wet suit this year - given that, very pleased.
What would you do differently?:

Practice in OW
Transition 1
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

A bit clumsy - lack of practice
What would you do differently?:

do more than one Tri in a year
Bike
  • 38m 7s
  • 13 miles
  • 20.46 mile/hr
Comments:

First tri using my Shiv - very happy. Stayed in aero for almost all of it, except a few dangerous curves.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

Again, a bit slow changing shoes. Just out of practice
What would you do differently?:

practice
Run
  • 23m 22s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Knee a bit unstable at first, but got better. Didn't have anything left for a kick, and got passed by someone in my age group in the last quarter mile. I have always taken pride in NOT having that happen, so that was a disappointment.
What would you do differently?:

Run training was difficult due to my knee. Certainly need more miles and speed training.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked around and enjoyed the beautiful morning.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training due to injury.

Event comments:

Last time I did this it was a run bike run due to chop in the LI Sound. Happy to do the regular race this time - good course and well managed.

This was my first and only tri this year due to my knee injury and related lack of training in the run. It was fun and exhilarating and enough to remind me to train hard this off season and get back on track. Happy with my result.

To work on:
My transitions were pretty weak - out of practice mostly, but had several simple delays with shoes. Also, need a new race belt.
Will need more brick training - I felt like I couldn't kick into any other gear on the run - a good steady pace, but nothing left for a kick or push.
On the bike, need to practice hills on the Shiv. My flats were fast and I was passing people, but climbs were slow.

Blame it on Dave Scott perhaps, a career-long advocate of strength training---that the benefits of working out with weights, mostly indoors, entered discussions on performance and training.

I was in the moment, living a dream and on top of the whole world! Honestly, I wish everyone could experience that feeling because it truly cannot be described.

During the last few days I have noticed these symptoms: higher resting heart rate, increased stress and trouble sleeping. Am I overtraining?
