This creeped me out not only because its a butt shot, but in all honesty she looks about 12 1/2 to me. Thoughts? (maybe this should have been in political joe?)

Agreed - it is SFW. Apparently it is causing a huge stir...my guess is partly because everyone in the industry was already on edge after the sexist sock fiasco at Interbike this year. End of the day, adds like this aren't going to encourage my daughters to ride more. Its up there with the bad Bud light 'no' ads. Come on marketing folks. You are marketing to a diverse 2015 cycling community, not a 1985 frat party.

I guess the points about her looking young and being shoeless and the entire add having a double meaning are valid.  But I can say, for myself, I never caught any of that when I first looked at it.  Maybe it's because I have 4 daughters and I just don't look at young girls like that......but I also wonder about people who see those things so quickly and get offended so easy.  It almost seems like they are trying to be offended.

And another thing......one of the comments was "what in the actual F".........I see that all the time, in comment sections, with the "actual" put in there.  Are there people who talk that way?  I'd run from them as fast as I could.

Wow, that's a dumb looking ad. The bike is too big, she's wearing no shoes, and she looks freaking uncomfortable! That said, I'm not sure I would have looked at it and thought it was totally sexist. I know, it's a weird shot of someone's butt, but it's not like it suggestive or anything?? I'm not a dude though.

I'm a mountain biker and I will say I was pretty disgusted by the Interbike sock fiasco you mentioned. THAT was blatantly sexist. This? Meh. Looks like a pretty ineffective ad though!

Now that I've read the article I at least give props to Colnago for removing the photo and posting an appropriate apology when they realized that some folks were offended. Save Our Soles did no such thing after the Interbike fiasco, and I know a lot of women who will never buy their socks again - not the best marketing tactic.

It's the devolution of language because of the internet. I see it all the time, like for example when there's, i don't know, a picture of a unicorn schitting a rainbow and eating bacon at the same time with cats in the background, someone will simply write "because internet." I guess it's quicker to get the point across when you leave out entire sentence fragments. Trends like that spread like memes. It took me forever to figure out what sticking a # before a word meant, especially when people actually said it in real conversation. "# Yolo"

Back to the article though, I think it is pretty blatantly sexist, I mean they weren't exactly hiding the fact that she's deliberately sticking her keister right in our faces. It doesn't seem that shocking to me though because of how much of that I see in every other ad. Look at the ads in the back of Triathlete magazine and a lot of those are overly sexualized too. I think it's a cheap shot and it's about time for that kind of advertising to get phased out, but I'm not losing my mind over it either.

Okay, now that I've gone and looked at it I can give an opinion. First....If I had looked like that when I was 12, I would have been capable of getting myself into far more trouble than I could handle. While I do agree she looks young, I don't find it scandalous. I'm not really bothered by it. People being sexualized in marketing is no new thing, and a double entendre from a company doesn't give me pause or make me think they're sexist. It makes me think their marketing department doesn't have any fresh ideas, but no harm.
Here's the thing. I read a lot of Piers Anthony when I was a tween. Like, all of it. And then I went back and reread a bunch of it in my 30s. The female characters are awful. Their worlds revolve around men in a way that makes Bella Swan look like a strong and independent woman. And I think reading that kind of stuff did far worse for me than any advertisement. Because when you think about it, an ad is just there for a minute, and you really don't know anything about her. But a character in a book, she can seem real, she's a backstory, and reasons, and everything. That's a lot more dangerous.

ETA: realizing now that my avatar is an 8 year old picture of my legs speaks volumes that I'm the kind of feminist that wants healthcare and education for all women, and thinks worrying about sexy imagery in the media can wait until all the female genital mutilation has been ended.

Meh.  Where's the uproar over, oh say, every ad Calvin Klein has made since forever?

Non issue.

[rant]"Add" is a mathematical function. "Ad" is a short form of "advertisement". [/rant]

When I saw that ad, my first thought was "the bike is way too big for her". My second thought was "where are her shoes?"

I must be getting old.

"the entire add having a double meaning are valid" can someone give me a break down on this ?  I don't read it.

The ad is pretty dumb and I agree she looks crazy young.  If you could see the profile of the bike or something it wouldn't be bad I guess.  Plus if the bike isn't as tall as she is.  The shoe thing doesn't bother me.   Maybe she's walking the bike out of her bed room and doesn't want to mess up her floors with her bike shoes on.

Well, you have to reach, but I'll give it to them on the whole "ride" thing....although I agree it's a stretch.  Like I said, you have to want to be offended, and I don't try to be that person.

And I'd like to ad this......it all doesn't ad up to me.....but I don't look at adds that way.

Don't get me started on the Viagra commercials (adds) during prime time.......without a doubt the dumbest crap ever.  I just wanted to watch a football game and next thing I know I'm staring at a 10 year old girl asking me what an erection is.  (mommy doesn't know either)  LMAOOOO

There is no bad publicity, right?  Did anyone here think at all about Colnago today, yesterday, this week, this month, or even this year?  The ad overachieved.  It cost them virtually nothing.  And now people are talking about and focused on Colnago.

I don't know about all that.  I think that's the first time I've even seen the word Colnago is quite some time.......it didn't cause me to look for it in other places.  I still don't care.

I know people say that whenever one of these adds go sideways......but I think they're reaching.

To this point and your other - I think they are related. I think many folks are now on hyper alert after the stripper socks fiasco, looking to see if the industry learned its lesson. Colnago is probably getting more scrutiny because the socks are in the not too distant past.

Yep, not only are those commercials horrible but they are unbelievable long. (innuendo) Those commercials start and if you're in an uncomfortable situation it's like they never end.

I was thinking the same thing...maybe trying to get under the skin of folks after the Interbike thing.

You know, I did a search to see what the socks thing was all about since I never heard about it....or cared.  I think that was also much ado about nothing.  I mean really.....who cares?  I would look at the sock, probably chuckle and shake my head, then throw it away.  Who gets wound up about this stuff?  There's so much stuff out there today that's in poor taste it is impossible to single one out......so why waste the time?

Oh....and for the "free publicity" thing.....I looked at a half dozen searches for the socks.....hell if I can remember what brand the stupid things were.

This is exactly why I posted it as a question for discussion. Is naked Lance sexist? Where is the line? What am I riding this weekend? Not a 12 year old girl, that's for sure!

For me - I find it annoying. True story - today I rode with my very first pair of clipless shoes (my puppy ate two other pairs). I bought these shoes in 1997 and it was the first year or second year that Sidi produced a womens specific shoe. Since then, things have gotten better. On my ride home tonight, I stopped at the shop my spouse works at to try on shoes so I can order some new ones, and there were four shelves of mens shoes and one shelf for the women. Its a huge improvement in 20 years, but that's still a huge disparity. Add in ads like that and socks like that - it creates a very dude centric image of cycling that will keep SOME women (not all women) from feeling welcome to participate in the sport. To use an aptly timed Thanksgiving analogy - women are still at the kids table as far as the industry marketing is concerned. You guys get the majority of the cool stuff, or at least get it first, and we get the lilac colored seconds. Purple colored bs can only go so far in making up for marketing that is 100% geared towards men.

That's my opinion, being a woman who isn't shocked, but certainly annoyed by this stuff...and equally annoyed by having to sell stuff like womens specific bike pumps. They both royally miss the marketing mark.

I disagree.....although I think some gals are better at whining than guys are.  Look, I have daughters in their 30's and I have twin 15 year olds.  One of the twins plays coed water polo and now rows, the other one barrel races horses and does some cross country jumping. At 5'10 and 150-160 and athletic as hell they can hold their own with any boy....and that's how we raised them. One dabbled in triathlon in the youth elite series and she had some WAY cool gear.....as cool as her brother or any other guy.  My horse kid has great stuff.  I have never heard any of my kids complain that they couldn't get gear as good or cool as the other gender.......I would call BS on anyone who says they can't.

Is there sexism......I suppose from all the whining and crying I hear there must be.....but I'm not buying the idea that any girl can't get what the guys can get....my girls would laugh at it.

Look, cool girl hunting gear.

LB that damn picture, you're the worst.

Its a weird advertisement........but I think a better strategy would be ignorning it and not buying their stuff rather than giving them all the press.  Plus they're italian and we all know [insert stereotype about creepy italian men here].
