Subject: Upgrade Crank Questions
Hi folks!

I am looking to upgrade my crankset since my middle ring has some worn teeth and it is what likely broke my chain a few weeks back. I have a 1994 Trek 2120 with a RX-100 52/42/30 crank. See the bikepedia link below for the specs on my bike. My question is, would ANY 52/42/30 crank work on my bike? They do not make my RX-100 crank anymore and I have been looking online for used ones but I started to think it might be better to purchase a new crank to ensure the teeth are good but I honestly do not know what will fit my bike or be compatible. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Anthony

I think the answer is generally yes, but you will need to get the proper bottom bracket cartridge, and probably a narrower chain.
Most cranks today are 11 speed, but still a lot of 10 speed cranks available.

I assume the shifter for the FD is a friction type.

This crankset would be a good choice: Shimano 105 FC-5703 Triple Crank, and a hollowtech BB (BBR60 for example.

You might have to adjust the FD because the chainrings wont be in the same spot as the old crankset due to the spindle length.

any reason why you wouldnt just replace the worn chain ring? You will need to measure the bolt circle diameter (BCD) and know your tooth count - 42 for your middle ring. You will really want to stick to a 8speed ring as moving to a narrower 9 or 10 speed ring will lead to shifting issues.

I read somewhere about "bar ends" to put on your handle bars, do you recommend them? Is this similar to adding clip on aero bars?

The wheels are my first area of concern and I have started to shop around. I find it nauseating to think of spending the same amount for wheels as my bike. Any help?

By becoming more aware of your pedal stroke, you can choose to manipulate where and how you activate your leg muscles as your foot traces the circular trajectory at the cranks.

So when it comes to triathlon, the largest investment we make, in both terms, comes in the bike. Looking at ways to get faster, while considering a budget, is a bind for most triathletes.

The Quattro pedal is Crank Brothers’ formal offering for the road cycling set. The company has taken their simple but effective EggBeater design and added a low profile platform.

Whether your bike is new, new to you, or you have not been on the bike for a long time, you really should spend some time thinking about how your bike fits you.
