So, I finally pulled the trigger to upgrade my Giant TCR composite. I had been running 105's everywhere for a long time, and I added a few components along the way, like ultegra brakes, ultegra front and rear derailluer and dura-ace pedals.

New Parts list -

Shimano Ultegra 6800 Chainset - 11 Speed / 172.5mm / 36/52 / Grey

Shimano Ultegra 6800 Bottom Bracket - Black / English (BSA)

Shimano Ultegra 6800 STI Levers - 11 Speed / Black Cables

Shimano Ultegra 6800 Chain

Shimano Dura Ace 9000 Brake Calipers - Pair

Shimano Ultegra 6800 Cassette - 11-28 / 11 Speed

Continental GatorSkin Folding Road Tyre - 700c - Black / 700c / 23mm

Now, I have to find time to start swapping out parts.

I have been racing with them. I have them wrapped around Mavic Ksyrium elites.

What should I know about not racing with them?

Watt wasters...This site does testing and his results (see sidebar) have a 7 w difference for the GP4000s (12.2w) to Gatorskin (19.3) tire, that's a single tire comparison!

See comparisons of some better tires here, he won't bother testing a Gatorskin!  IMHO, GP4000s is a much better tire for training and racing you don't want to change out tires.  If you don't mind changing tires and want some of the least Crr then Conti SuperSonics, Specialized Turbo Cotton or others in the top 10.

If you don't mind my asking, what did you have to pay for all of these things?

Just a total is fine.....

$704 for all the parts shipped. I ordered outside US so I had to pay $28.50 to UPS international.

UTOH!

OP, whatever tires you choose you should also be using latex tubes to get a couple more W savings.

Dang! That's a lot of good info. I just like em for the crappy roads in SoCal.

Looks like I will have to switch tires now. I'll put these on both my son's bikes

I imagine they're fine as a training tire (the Gatorskins) but I would not use them for racing.  You can get the 4000s II's at Probikekit for about $82ish a pair when they're on sale.

Was there something wrong with your old components?

lot of miles on them, but still decent shape.

I did a ride for OCRA, and as a new participant I was entered into a drawing for a new bike. I actually won that bike and the components on it are very poor. I decided to swap out some of my old parts to that bike and refresh my regular daily bike.

I was just wondering because you gain very little by upgrading from 105's.

Well, just for the sake of conversation, do you gain anything, other than a weight delta?

If you had a bike with 105 on it, is there anything you would feel you needed to upgrade? I bought a bike with an 11 speed 105 group on it.

I can't really answer that in detailed fashion.

the obvious is gear changes and crank length. This may be a turn out to be all for nothing, but I am hoping to benefit a little on hills.

If you go from 105 to Ultegra or DA with the same gearing and crank length, chances are you will not feel anything. there is a little weight savings, and maybe it will feel smoother(maybe).

Personally I would not waste the money on upgrading components unless stuff was worn out(assuming I had 105 group).

that's a good price for the group. I'd like to do that to change to 11 speed but don't want to buy new wheels (yet)
