I'll be volunteering at Bike Special needs this Sunday and signing up for the 2016 race on Monday. Registration opens at 8am, but I am curious to know how competitive is is to be in this line. Can I show up at 7:30am? Should I be there at 5am? Has anyone here ever volunteered and NOT get to sign up because you were too far back in the line?

To the athletes racing on Sunday, I can't wait to cheer you all on! Its going to be a great day

You're guaranteed.  I did this in Florida at the weekend.  The trick is to turn up 90 minutes AFTER the opening time and you won't have to queue at all.  Worked a dream for me on Monday.

I would be a nervous WRECK! I'm the kind of person that shows up early to the airport, then waits and waits and waits in front of the gate, just in case!
But I'm happy to know its guaranteed!

Listen to the guy above you. Getting there at 4 AM is not required and not that smart unless you just like getting up at 3:30 and hanging out in the cold.

ETA: Thanks for volunteering. You guys make this race (and really every IM) happen.

thanks for volunteering. I'll be racing and appreciate the support.

I believe they have started handing out wristbands the past couple years to avoid having people get in line at 3am.

Yup! I was up early and didn't have to and it was VERY COLD. Once they opened the registration it wasn't a long wait to sign up.

I arrived last year at 4am and was about #25 in line. They let all the volunteers in to register at 6am and I was out of there by 6:20. I personally am glad I showed up super early. It was cold yes, but was I guaranteed a spot - yes. Bring a chair, a warm blanket or sleeping bag and snacks.

You get to be good friends with the people waiting around you. We got someone to make a Starbucks run around 5am and held spots if bathroom breaks were needed.

IMAZ sold out ON SITE last year so I'd say, as easy as you can get there, the better! No regrets that I got there early!

AND - THANK YOU for volunteering!!!!!

My experience as a volunteer at a sprint triathlon. My reasons for arising before the sun were not to work out, but to volunteer. I wanted to give back to a sport I’m learning to love.

Everyone and anyone that has ever raced in a triathlon should take it upon themselves to volunteer at just one event next season. It is an eye-opening and inspirational experience.
