Subject: Kick on back
Hi...silly question. Training program I'm following has me doing alternating 25m lengths of kick on front (I know how to do that with the kickboard) and kick on back.

Doesn't really explain where to hold the kickboard while I'm on my back...kind of hold it over my chest maybe?

Sorry, I know this is a ridiculous Q. Thanks in advance for answering.

Some people do hold the kick board (behind the head, usually, with arms extended). This protects your head from hitting the wall! I prefer to do that kind of kicking with fins, arms extended behind me, with no kick board.

When I was learning to swim, my coach had me hold the kickboard over my stomach/across my hips. Now I don't bother with the kick board when I'm on my back; I just hold my arms over my head in a streamline position.

Thank you both for your responses!

Ended up holding the kickboard behind my head during my workout, but was messing around after and was doing it just fine without the board so I'll probably just turf it next time.

As you can tell, swimming is the moon to me...appreciate the help.

I don't use a board when kicking on my back.  Hold a tight streamline with your arms over your head.

x2. Kicking on you back without a kick board is a great way to learn how to hold a streamline position.

When we do back kick sets it is always without a board. Great for streamline practice. But, if you do use a board on your back don't hold it flat like you would on your front. Hold it vertically, like a sharks fin. That way you can have your hands together on one end and it still works the streamline. Hope that helps. It is hard to describe in words.

It seems that if I swim that slow I begin to sink and I have to either kick or pull harder to compensate while my heart-rate starts going up. I find myself kicking too hard trying to keep afloat.

Good swimming is relaxed swimming. Relaxed swimming depends on practicing the best techniques and the best body position.
