As the subject states. Softshell Cycling jacket for cold winter mornings.

I went for a ride this morning with a base compression dri fit on and a medium jacket. Froze my butt off. had to turn around and come home.

I started searching for this type of jacket, but need some opinions on brand and recommendations on what works. dry pocket, zippers for breathing on warming weather occurs, sweating still breathable etc...

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

between mid 30's to high 50's. Socal winter temps.

My assumption and need seem to be basically a long sleeve jersey but with room for a base layer and cut that wind out from my chest area. I would like to stay form fitting too with to much drag from jacket.

I bought a pearl izumi soft shell jacket 2 years ago. Love it! I use it for running outside in the winter as much as biking. The actual model I bought is not sold any more, but a pearl soft shell will be perfect for the weather you're talking about.

I'll second this...although I'm not sure if mine is technically a softshell or a thin form fitting windstopper fleece.

Third, this.  I love Pearl Izumi stuff.  Works great and far more affordable than competitors.

LAYERS.

Comfort and safety are the most important aspects of cycling. Having multiple layers will make it more enjoyable. This isn't the guide I hoped for but is a start. http://www.greenvillespinners.org/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=2...

I personally would wear a base layer, probably short sleeve if it potentially was going to warm up. Arm and leg warmers. Vest. Windbreaker. As I start to warm up the wind breaker usually comes off.

Not a lot of options around my area yet. every shop is limited or nothing at all. shops say outerwear is on order.

I did however stop into a local tri shop and they had ASSOS, which i had never heard of. the fit was awesome, but little steep on price for a jacket @ $239

anybody have any comments on this jacket is it worth the extra price?

Pearl Izumi soft shell, I wear it over layers exactly as you describe - just enough to cut the wind.  I'm on my second in ~10 years of cycling and I'd say it's my most useful piece of gear.

When I went searching a couple years ago- I settled on this one:

http://www.competitivecyclist.com/gore-bike-wear-phantom-jacket-mens

It feels good. Well designed.  wind protective in the front and breathable in the back.  Good reflective bits.  Zip off sleeves.

tip:  half unzipping where the sleeves separate- gives you pit zips.

While I'm sure it's not the only great jacket out there- it's certainly a nice one.  Wait for cyber monday and you should find something good on sale.

BT,

I decided to go with this jacket. I have not tried it yet, but it appears to be very solid.

High 50s seems overkill for a soft shell.

“Less is more,” is a common buzz phrase in endurance sports today. It refers to the trend of training less but focusing on intensity and quality rather than on quantity.

You ride hard enough that you are working but not so hard that you can’t do the same thing the next day. 700 km or 400 miles a week.
