Mandurah, Western Australia
Australia
World Triathlon Corporation
27C / 81F
Sunny
Total Time = 7h 08m 47s
Overall Rank = 896/911
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 79/79
Event warmup:

A few minutes of steady swimming with some short bursts of speed.
Swim
  • 32m 29s
  • 1900 meters
  • 01m 43s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was a horrid swim. My wetsuit prevented me hyper-extending my upper body so lifting my head to sight was a constant struggle and a gross lack of training left me happy to be over with what should be my best leg.

22nd in my age group shows how crap it was. I should be in the top 5-10 in my division and 100 overall.

I'm back in the water training alone for my next 20k ocean swim because my squad no longer exists. I don't think I'll ever regain the fitness and speed I had in 2013 but I will improve significantly over what I've got now with consistent work.
What would you do differently?:

More training.
Transition 1
  • 15m 28s
Comments:

A reasonable time for me but super slow by any decent standard. I have work to do.
Bike
  • 3h 23m 42s
  • 90 kms
  • 26.51 km/hr
Comments:

An almost dead flat course made difficult by the brutal winds. The wind picked up during my second lap and killed my average speed. Overall I was 19 seconds slower than my best half bike time that was also set in windy conditions that picked up on the final lap.

My rear derailleur was not adjusted correctly and as I shifted down for the final 100m to T1 I shifted off the large cog and the back wheel locked at about 20km/h. My rear tyre got ripped up and I had to carry the bike in.
What would you do differently?:

I need to train more consistently.
Transition 2
  • 05m 49s
Comments:

For me a reasonably fast T2 but still very slow. I have some work to do. This was my 8th triathlon, ever, so I'll get there.
What would you do differently?:

I just need to get faster.
Run
  • 2h 51m 19s
  • 21.1 kms
  • 08m 07s  min/km
Comments:

In what seems to be becoming a trend, once a gain my run leg was my best. With no training and in brutal wind that had me walking uphill at the back end of the course, I managed an 8 minute PB.

I had none of the ITB pain that plagued me in Vichy and Pula and was able to go straight into a 1/1 jog/walk interval from the bike.
What would you do differently?:

I just need to train.
Post race
Warm down:

Massage

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training.

Event comments:

I went in expecting to freeze to death based on the weather forecasts but was pleasantly surprised with the mildly warm day that eventuated.

This is a good half for anybody who likes a flat bike course and doesn't mind the high probability of ball busting wind.

Well done! Congrats on a PB on the run! So glad the bike issue only caused damage to the bike. That could have been ugly.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.

A bad race left me smoldering, but time and a gentle breeze ignited my passion to race again.
